The Amityville Horror is a book and a series of films that tell the story of the Lutz family, who moved into a new home on Long Island, New York in 1975, only to be driven out 28 days later by what they claimed were supernatural phenomena. The house at 112 Ocean Avenue had a dark past: in 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. had murdered his entire family while they slept in their beds. The Lutz family, George and Kathy and their three children, moved into the house in December 1975. They were aware of the murders that had taken place there, but they were convinced that the house was their dream home and that they could put the tragic events behind them.

However, it wasn't long before strange things began to happen. The family noticed that the house seemed to have an eerie feeling to it, and they started experiencing strange noises and smells. The children reported seeing ghostly figures, and Kathy claimed to have seen a pig-like creature with red eyes staring at her through a window. George began to have terrible nightmares, and Kathy reported feeling as though she was being watched.

The family also experienced a number of physical phenomena, such as doors and windows that would open and close on their own, strange cold spots, and unexplained noises. They also claimed to have seen a ghostly figure of a boy standing at the top of the stairs. The family's pet dog refused to go into certain rooms in the house, and it seemed to be in a constant state of agitation.

The Lutzes tried to ignore the strange occurrences, but they became increasingly difficult to ignore. They contacted a local Catholic priest, Father Ralph J. Pecoraro, to bless the house. However, after performing the exorcism, the priest himself experienced strange phenomena and refused to return to the house.

The family's experiences in the house became so intense that they eventually contacted a paranormal investigator, Ed Warren, and his wife Lorraine Warren. The Warrens conducted an investigation and concluded that the house was indeed haunted. They believed that the ghost of Ronald DeFeo Jr.'s father, who had died in the house several years earlier, was responsible for the strange occurrences. The Warrens also believed that the house was built on an Indian burial ground, which had contributed to the intense level of paranormal activity.

The Lutzes had had enough and they decided to leave the house. They moved out of the house on January 14, 1976, only 28 days after they had moved in. The family's experiences in the house were documented in a book by Jay Anson, which was published in 1977, and the story was later turned into a series of films, the first of which was released in 1979.

The Amityville Horror is one of the most well-known and enduring tales of a haunted house in American popular culture. The story has been the subject of numerous books, documentaries, and films, and continues to fascinate people to this day. However, the events of the story have been called into question by many skeptics, who argue that the story is a hoax perpetrated by the Lutz family and their author, Jay Anson. Despite the skeptics, the story of the Amityville Horror continues to be a source of fascination and intrigue for many people.

It's important to note that some of the events and facts of the story were disputed and the Lutz family's account have been called into question. However, the fact is, the house still exists and still have people who believe in the supernatural events that happen in the house.
