My friend Neve told me that I should take my hits like everyone else and get online to look for my Prince Charming. Kiss all of the frogs that I needed to find him. I am not even the self-deprecating or defeating type, but it just figured that I would drag myself screaming and kicking to my phone to open up a dating app. Neve, who was very self-deprecating and defeatist, did not have any tolerance for my romantic notions that you could still meet the love of your life in person.

Underwater, Nobody Can Hear You Scream.
Blowing out an exasperated sigh, Elli threw back the light sheet that was covering her body, sat up, and kicked her legs over the side of the bed. As she rose, sweat trickled down her naked back, forming a pool at the base of her spine before disappearing into the already-damp sheet. It was another sleepless, hot August night. Two months ago, Elli had turned 16. Two days ago, her mother had finally succumbed after a long battle with cancer. Two hours ago, Elli had (apparently) broken up with her boyfriend of nearly a year. The same boyfriend that she’d tenderly shared her virginity with had decided that being an emo douchebag was more important than being present for his girlfriend during “this difficult time.” She’d called him – long distance even – and told him that her mom had died. His response?

Past Reflections
It was a foggy October morning when Johnny picked me up for a long weekend getaway to his family’s lake house on Governor’s Island on Lake Winnipesaukee. He had been looking forward to this trip all month long and perfectly planned every detail as if his life depended on it.

The Singing Waters
The mist hung low and heavy. Sticky cold and slimy, it smeared across the roads obscuring all until that the car's headlights seemed like will o' wisps. Insubstantial. John wiped a hand over his face and looked at Cora sleeping in the passenger seat, belly full and bulging. It heaved and roiled as the baby moved inside - a wondrous thing. It made him feel sick. Like a tiny alien, an interloper, had snuck into his wife and bloated her beyond recognition, pushing and demanding until she had no time for him at all. That's why he had needed-

Honeymoon for One
It didn’t have to be this way! Over and over, my mind screamed the words as I fought my way through the thicket. Sweat poured into my eyes, and covered my body in a clammy, sticky film. The dirt clung to my skin. I could see my breath as it ran away from me. Laboriously, I dragged my burden over the brambles once in a while, cutting myself on a branch or a barb. The weight that I’d effortlessly carried across the threshold of our home not so long ago was substantially harder to navigate in its current state. And I realized how much you’d carried me, in the beginning. How much lighter you always made things.

The DarkRoom
It's dark, and I can't see anything. My mind keeps wandering to things I never knew I knew; is this what insanity looks like? The room is so cold I can't even feel my fingers on my cheek. Every bit of me is numb, and I don't understand. " hello? Is anyone listening to me?" I have to keep calm, " hello is anyone there!?" What is that noise? I'm scared! " HEY! IF YOU'RE OUT THERE SAY SOMETHING!" I feel sick. I don't know what's going on, but I can just feel it; someone is in here. I have to get out of here, I have to run, but there's nowhere to go! How long have I been here? It feels like forever. "twinkle twinkle little star. Haha haha" why is this funny to me? Why am I laughing at a time like this? I don't get it! When's my birthday? How old am i? Do I have a family?

Daybreak
“Deanna, is death a friend?” The small woman untucked her legs from beneath her as Sebastian’s voice cut through the frigid autumn air. It was too early to turn on the heat and their pockets hadn’t been plump this year as it was. Wood was expensive and they had no kindling to speak of. So, they went cold.

Something's Not Right
It’s fall, and the fog has settled in low today. Visibility is so poor. I can’t see more than a few feet in front of me. If I don’t pay attention, I’ll walk right off the edge into the water. The lake is empty, but the water ripples like a busy summer day. All the tourists and summer workers have returned to their everyday lives far away from here.
