Horror fiction that delivers on its promise to scare, startle, frighten and unsettle. These stories are fake, but the shivers down your spine won't be.
Shapes into Legends
Ragged boots fell with crashes as loud as cymbals in the otherwise quiet forest. Morning dew slid from the leaves and dripped softly onto the face of a weather-beaten man. He rubbed the sleeve of his jacket over his forehead but it too was damp from many rainy nights.

Charlie
My father had two loves: whiskey and violence. Meanwhile, my mother huddled herself away in prescription pills and excuses. Excuses why she could never leave him, and excuses why she needed more medications. I say these things factually, no malice for either of them in my heart. In the end, maybe he did care more for her than I thought, because when he found her body, dead from an apparent overdose, he drank himself into a stupor, put his Smith and Wesson 442 to his head, and joined her. At least, this is the story etched together by the police and relayed to me. They didn't believe my mother's overdose to be intentional and, truth be told, neither do I. It's more likely that she didn't care either way. Maybe being alive and dying had become such vagaries to her that it simply didn't matter to her anymore, much in the way a drunk stops caring how much they've already drunk, only looking forward to the next one and the one after. They died almost ten years ago, and the day of their funeral, after burying them both, listening to the preacher of the only church they had ever attended tell bald-faced lies about the qualities of their character, was the day I met Charlie.

Do You Know What Bugs Me?
By: Dennis R. Humphreys Lucy and Darnell met two years after college in a small coffee shop where they both ate lunch a few times each week. Their attraction was immediate, and before long they were dating... in six months they were living together and within another year they were married. They had common interests, one of which was camping. Both of them spent time together in the forests and in the boonies just enjoying nature. Their honeymoon was even a camping trip to Ontario, in the wrong time of the year, where they were inundated with black flies. No one told them the secret was to not camp near fresh water. That's where the insects lived and bred. At least you knew you had clean water, even though you wanted to shoot yourself.

Return of the Shadows
Cheyenne came back home to Shiloh, where she grew up since the 70s. She was 21 and had just finished college. After experiencing the hardships and highs of the bridge between her old life and a new one, Cheyenne thought it was best to get in touch with her roots. She even thought to give up her apartment in Kansas City and move back into her hometown, but something told her not to make that decision just yet. “Let’s just see how the summer goes,” she told herself while driving past a sign that read, Welcome to Shiloh: Where Everyone Belongs. Cheyenne reached for her radio, looking for any station to play the right song. Finally, she found one blaring the familiar tunes of Paradise City as she followed the road that led her back to her family home. It was only a few moments when she entered the uniformed neighborhood where the same family home came into view. As soon as she parked her car in the driveway, she hopped out and pulled her bags out of the trunk.

The Generals
The Christmas lights had flicked on in the front yard. Luther glanced up, out through the door, unaware that the sun had gone down so fast. They had been in the old barn since noon, trenching and re-trenching the churned-up hard pan around their armies. There hadn't been any animals in that barn since the forties. The previous owners had sold it off, and throughout the early sixties, it had been the favored play place of the Richards family. Kids and cousins had jumped from the rafters into piles of forgotten hay, rotten and stinking, and as likely to burst into flames as not. Since time immemorial they had chased coach-whips through the sagging stalls before turning with mixed squeals of delight and terror as the snakes reared up on their bellies and chased their aggressors back to the barn doors. The game had tapered off when most recent of the Miz Richards brought home the barn cats. They hunted everything. No rodents, no snakes, just like Miz Richards liked it. It was perhaps the only point upon which Luther had agreed with the woman at any time in their very short acquaintance.

Mr. Knife
I spent two years in prison. And where, you might ask? The place was called Drumheller Penitentiary. Just plain old, Drum, as people who did time there would prefer to call it. I served two years out of a five-year sentence. It’s really true what they say: you know, all the mumbo-jumbo talk on the outside? In movies and what not. Good behaviour really does get you to a head start on an early release. Parole that is. And even then, the government still owns your ass until your warrant expiry.

The People Of Nile Island
David suddenly awoke from his sleep. His head was spinning, and he felt as if his skull would crack open at any moment. He looked around and could barely make out the silhouettes of his crew mates. It was pitch black but other than that, he had no way of telling what time it was or how much time had passed since they had landed on the island.

The Cottage
I grab my mop, bucket, and broom and head into my grandparents’ old house. I inherited their old house in Maine in the middle of nowhere. My mom told me (her dad) my grandpa wanted me to have it. I thought it was odd as I am not really someone who loves the outdoors. I packed my car and headed up on Thursday to beat the Boston traffic. The house was more of a cottage, more like a summer getaway camp. It reminded me of some place the frat boys would hang out on a long fall weekend. It was all mine, mine to manage and maintain. There was this part of me that wanted nothing to do with it, I wanted to sell it and just collect the money. I just couldn’t do it, I really wanted to, but I didn’t have it in me to abandonee it. It really was charming and cute. The little cottage is a two bedroom with an open floor plan and sunroom that looked out into the woods. The woods are my least favorite, I always felt watched when I would visit my grandparents, I even feel like I am being watched now. My grandpa was an odd man that loved space, aliens, and the paranormal. Their little cottage was filled with all kinds of weird books and cut out articles my grandfather found interesting. My grandmother just went with all his crazy collecting and stories, she kept the cottage in pretty good shape. After her death my grandfather just kind of hung out in his room and the kitchen. I was prepared to dust and declutter. Once I got to the house, I walked around to assess the mess. It was not too bad, so I grabbed my mop, bucket, and broom and headed for my grandpa’s bedroom first. His room was the worst of all. He had stacks of books and old newspapers dated to the 1950s. I took a deep breath and headed on in.

The Hitchhikers Who Hide in the Punctum Caecum
You have a blind-spot. This isn’t a criticism, it’s a fact. If you’ve ever been stargazing and discovered some distant celestial object that fled from your field of vision when observed head-on you’ve experienced this phenomenon. You may have been encouraged at some point to draw a dot on an index card and find it yourself, goaded into a little game to teach you a thing or two about perception.
