fiction
Horror fiction that delivers on its promise to scare, startle, frighten and unsettle. These stories are fake, but the shivers down your spine won't be.
Resolution
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. My breath comes and goes, chaotic, like the tempest raging outside. One crumpled hand forcibly grips the pipe, the other holds the wound in my stomach. I stifle my grunts at the waves of pain while lighting flashes outside.

Do Not Open the Door
Do not open the door. That’s what the sign affixed to the beige color door inserted between the bureau and tv stand read. I didn’t even notice it when I initially entered the room. Usually, I am a rules follower. I figured it was a maintenance issue—a faulty lock or hinge.

Mater visits Mr. Toad in Hell
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. That is unless you dare distract the one-eyed king guarding the Fairy Ring. The Mater had invited herself into the ancient realm of Ogama, the trickster Toad and Yokai demon who sat underneath his toadstool, under the great mountain. He grown large and dangerous and remained hidden, behind his rainbow breath, until his long, powerful, sticky tongue reached out to catch most anything.

Behind the Metal Door
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. That’s what Sara Mitchell said. Josh looked at it with curiosity. “Ok Miss Marchell.” Saras son looked up at Josh as his mother walked out the door. “Wanna play basketball on the Xbox?” “You ready to get beat?” Steve, his babysitter said “Yeah right! I’ll kick your butt.” Josh looked at the closed door again, it was metal, it looked heavy. He wondered what was behind it. A secret lab? A server room and Miss Marchell was actually a secret agent? He shrugged it off and got back to the game. A few hours later, “Go brush your teeth and get into bed bud.” Josh said Steve yawned and walked to the bathroom. A few minutes later he came out, said goodnight, went into his room and hopped into bed. Steve sat on the couch and looked for a movie to watch but that door was still on his curious mind. He walked up to the door and looked at it for a bit “Nope, don’t open it.” The door was locked but his father was a locksmith and taught him how to pick a lock at the age of 10. “What would it hurt to take a little look; she’d never know.” He got out his lockpick set, it took him a while to pick it but he did. He had to push the door with a lot of strength to open it. He looked inside but it was empty. “Is there some invisible technology in here?” He walked in and all of a sudden, his head started hurting, a few seconds later he walked out the door and closed it with an evil laugh and smile.

The Other Side. Content Warning.
There was only one rule: ‘don’t open the door’. Sara didn’t ask why when she rented the house. The price was too good to question a strange rule. The door at the end of the hall seemed harmless—its wood swollen with age, the brass knob ice-cold under her fingers when she first touched it. Still, the landlady’s warning echoed in her mind.

A Stranger Truth
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. Sister Jillian prays; her rosary drapes around her youthful clasped hands. Her voice is frenetic, shaking on every syllable, “Forgive me Father for I have sinned…” She falls to her knees on the dank cobblestone floor, cowering. Her habit frames her anguished expression at what she’s uncovered.

Temptation. Content Warning.
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. I’ve never been so tempted to break a rule in my life. I’ve been watching her every night for months now. This ain’t my first guard detail, but it's my favorite by far. How could it not be?

Abyssal Ascent (Part I). Content Warning.
Ramona Reyes lived by three very simple rules. They were her guiding light to surviving the life of a pirate in the void of space. Three magic rules that if broken would lead to almost certain chaos, injury, loss, even death.

The Door That Should Never Be Opened
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. Ava stared at the old wooden door, its peeling paint and rusted hinges whispering secrets from a time long forgotten. The candlelight flickered in the small room, casting long, eerie shadows on the walls. She could hear the wind howling outside, rattling the windows, but it was the faint sound behind the door that held her frozen in place—a scratching, faint but persistent.

Mindfeeder. Runner-up in Spooky Micro Challenge.
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. The specimen writhed and coiled. Small, spineless and limbless. Harmless. It lay in a sample dish, inside a clean room, behind a door which was hermetically, biologically and radiologically sealed.
