The House that Waits.
THE HOUSE THAT WAITS The road to Black Hollow was never meant to be driven at night. Locals said the fog there didn’t roll in — it rose, like something alive, like breath from a sleeping creature buried beneath the earth. Lisa had heard the stories her whole life, but stories were just stories. And she needed a place to stay.

The house on Wren Road had twelve windows. Lisa counted them the day she moved in—front room, kitchen, hallway, two bedrooms, attic dormer, all neat and ordinary. Twelve. She liked knowing the number. It made the place feel contained, understandable.

The Hollow-Root Orchard
The orchard behind the old farmhouse had always been wrong. Not dangerous in any obvious way. Just wrong in the quiet, persistent manner of something pretending to be harmless. The trees grew too close together, their trunks bowed inward like they were listening. Their roots curled above the soil like knuckles. And at night, the orchard made sounds—soft, deliberate sounds—like something shifting its weight.

Eternal Vortex
Friday, 5 p.m. To anyone else, the noise would be deafening. An endless, droning roar made up of countless dings, whistles, and chimes. Separate, any one of those sounds could be pleasant; set at the optimum pitch to set off the brain's pleasure centers. The flashing, colorful lights served the same purpose. All to make the machines look shinier. Prettier. More tempting to play. Altogether, however, it was just visual and auditory noise. Noise that would drill a lesser man's ears and overstimulate his senses mercilessly until he begged at the top of his lungs for it to stop.

The Long Draw
We used to go to Carrow's Cove every Fourth of July, back when my dad still had the boat and my aunt still had her cabin on the ridge above the water. It was 2009, I remember, because that was the summer the fireworks got cancelled halfway through on account of a storm rolling in off the water, and everybody had to pack up quick and scatter for their cars.
