“Makslophobia”

~Chris irby

Late on an October afternoon, there sat a child in her bedroom among her sat crafting supplies, cutting pieces of felt and ribbon. Meanwhile, her parents started arguing downstairs, which caused her to look at the items between her legs and sigh.

Ever since she was born nine years ago, her parents had been bickering and hitting each other. She sighed again at how boring it was at her house. So, she decided to go to her favorite spot, the cemetery, where she often went to visit her dead brother. While there, she often found an abandoned storage closet, which was often used by nightshift workers to get away with drinking and drug use.

She sat down among her stuff that she stashed a few weeks prior and swept aside the bottles and needles to place her latest creation on the ground. She noticed a magazine on the ground, not like the usual porno magazines. Instead, it had a red devil on the cover and a strange symbol on it: a star with a circle around it. The girl felt an attraction to it, as if it was calling her name. So, she stood up, grabbed a stick, and started to trace the symbol around the mask. Either by trick of light or maybe something else the pattern seemed to glow softly before fading. The wind suddenly blew the door open, erasing the symbol. In a daze she stood up and walked home feeling detached from her feelings. As she got home there sat the mask just a few feet away from where she stood, She smiled softly and gently rubbed her fingers around the eye holes she slipped it on. As she entered the house her parents were screaming again, this time her dad slapped her mom so hard she hit the ground and stayed still until her dad left for the local bar. Her mom stood up and put some ice on her face. And left the room. Unable to restrain herself she opened the knife drawer and lifted a small knife. She slipped it in her pocket and followed her mom to her bedroom. She gently closed the door behind her and crept up to her weeping mother, very quickly, She drew the knife and stuck it in her mom's neck. Blood gushed forth in every direction as her mother's life slipped away, agonizingly. After it was done, the little girl withdrew the knife and used her mom's blood to redraw the symbol. After that she curled up in the bed and went to sleep. When she woke up her dad was entering the bedroom, seeming too drunk to notice the blood on the floor and plopped down on the bed and fell asleep, waking up the girl. Dazed she stands up and quickly stabs the father waking him up frightened he runs from the masked girl gasping as blood pours from his belly he quickly reaches the gun safe in the basement and struggles to undo the lock suddenly the girl giggles giving away her position the father grabs the rifle his dad gave him and fires it blowing the girls arm off then reaching the bolt action and yanking it fires and blows off the rest of her head off destroying the mask and there he sat dying from his wounds cradling his dead childs' corpse weeping. In roughly one hour, the police arrived just in time to witness the father's final breath. The remnants of this tragic event were sealed away in a drawer, untouched, until they were stumbled upon by a young boy several years later. This hauntingly familiar incident has come to be known as "masklophobia."

The End.
