The Cave's Truth
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. The firelight caused strange shadows and light to dance along the surrounding walls of the small cabin to the beat of a soundless drum. They danced across the charted maps of caves and tunnel systems covering the walls. They flitted across the sketches of strange ruins and symbols on the table. They flowed across the framed pictures of my older brother and I and his missing expedition party, their frames delicately draped with cobwebs. And their dance even made its way over the open hatch in the floor leading to the entrance of the dark cave system below.

The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. They had been walking for hours, feet blistered and bruised from tripping over rocks and brush. Beth noticed the sky was growing dark again, and couldn’t bear the thought of another sweaty and sleepless night outside with the bugs. No one expected them back for three more days… or was it two? “How long have we been out here?”, each wondered silently, failing to conceal their inner panic. Nights refused to cool, the air a warm and sticky breeding ground for the insects they swatted away futilely. Beth froze when she saw the light up ahead. Eric stopped too, touching her arm, “What is it?” “I see a cabin up ahead.” she replied, “There’s a light in the window upstairs.” Neither moved.

The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. It was flickering weakly, a tiny yellow beating heart barely bright enough to illuminate the cabin’s sole occupant who lay face-down on the worm-eaten floorboards. Aside from her chest - which heaved as she huffed and puffed to catch her breath - she had barely moved since crashing through the door and promptly collapsing.
