The cursed fortune.
Madeline and me grew up in financial scarcity. After mother died when we were 12, the foster system took us in. Me and Madeline had to jump from family to family throughout the system, so we moved around often. It wasn’t advantageous enough how our foster parents abused their power. Laying in bed at night with a thin sheet covering my body, I stare at the ceiling fan mounted above me wondering when this nightmare come to pass. We loved mom and how funny and creative she was. We cherished every moment of her contagious laughter and beautiful graceful grin when we’d play video games together on multiplayer mode. We didn’t have much however, our mom did whatever she could to assure me and Madeline could face the world.

Highway 90 Red
Highway 90 Red Rosalyn shut her notebook and looked up at the red spots on her t-shirt reflected in the glass of the window. It’s done, she thought before immediately reopening the notebook, crossing out some lines and scribbling others, then finally shutting it again and exhaling as she pushed it away. “Now it’s done.”

The Third Day
Clarence sits on the edge of the concrete embankment with his feet dangling over the rushing city runoff. The freeway bridge above him casts a monolithic shadow; an incessant whir of traffic pervades the morning air like an empty airwave. He breathes deeply in, and the humid chill bites at his lungs in retort. He coughs.

Roses & Heather
A blinding glare from a cloudless summer sky reflects on Amelia’s freshly placed tombstone. As her casket descends into the earth, I realize that she is taking all that made me happy with her. I reach out, fresh cut flowers in my grasp. Calluna, the Scottish heather that decorates our family’s estate. I tell myself to let them go. To let her go. Just like the friends and family that circle her resting place will all let go. I stand and stare, bouquet in hand, waiting for my fingers to uncurl.

A Walk in the Woods
I was so tired of sitting in the same couple of rooms in my house due to the Covid pandemic. When I was not working remote, I spent my time watching television or playing video games. I was all caught up watching the Cobra Kai series and had mastered my collection of Xbox games until my eyes hurt. I just needed to get away from the house, so when the weather looked warm enough, I took a day off of work for a three-day weekend, so I wouldn’t be staring at my laptop screen all day. I wanted to take a moment to get back to nature and take a hike for a few hours to get away from things as I had been so stressed lately.

Tempted
The now vacant, but still towering mansion looked even more neglected today, than in years past. My friends and I, we called ourselves “the boys”, were very familiar with the property. After all, we had walked past this stately old house many times over the years. It once had been a happy home filled with many children, and later, it had been converted to a parlor for those town people who had passed on, and still later, it had been renovated again. It was now a rooming house rented out as cheap housing for nomads and derelicts. He was the last lingering occupant.

COUNT
There are four different liquor stores on Grand Avenue between 69th Street and Queens Blvd. Each one carries Old Dog bourbon for about the same price. About once a week Dante becomes a customer to one of these establishments on his way home from work. Which one he chooses is dependent on parking availability. The first one with an easy spot to pull into is the winner. If there are no spots near the first three, the final option, Lady Bea Liquors is located in front of the Q58 bus stop so although risking a summons, there will be a spot. The day Dante engages in this weekly act of consumerism is determined simply by his supply. When the bottle is finished, he buys another. Sometimes it is five days, sometimes seven and on particularly stressful or celebratory weeks it may be three.
