The Coin
It has been 2 hours since I found the coin. Scurrying to work in my typical fashion, wearing the same scrubs I wore on my last shift at the office. They smelled fine, and frankly I was just too tired to care. Then, everything changed. As I was stepping onto the subway platform, I noticed a shiny silver dollar just lying on the ground. Picking it up I noticed the word “no” scratched into the surface of the coin, and it made me smile. Dad always called me his “NONO girl” partially because it was short for Nola and partially because I was always up to something I shouldn’t have been. Suddenly, I felt lucky.

The Black Book
I started my day like any other. Alarm goes off, hit snooze, fall back asleep, repeat. Per usual, I was running late for work. In a panic, I jump out of bed, throw on some pants while I brush my teeth, and slip on a beanie to hide my greasy, unwashed hair.

She always made it a priority to set some money aside for the festival the past two years. The Printing Press
Zachary A. McCoy The scalding hot plates slipped easily from the hard plastic rack into Herbert’s hands. As he caught the dishes he mindlessly folded them like a deck of cards. His body mechanically swiveled around and placed them in a stack ready to be carted in the dining room. Down the line, Franny was scrubbing a metal pan covered in egg to no avail. Finally, opening the window above her station, Franny threw the dish out the window. Metallic clangs could be heard as eggs and metal skittered across the nursing home parking lot.

Journey's End
Old timber stairs creaked under new weight. They had more visitors than expected today. Millie made her way up into Grandfather Jeffrey's old attic. The lights were on, but flickering, as if out of a horror film. She saw the shadow of a body outlined in the corner. It was her brother, Nathan.

The Reflection
Daylight had passed quickly since he’d begun to trod through the marshy, sodden field, boots getting sucked deeper into the mud with each step. A sullen rain had plastered hair to his head, obscuring his vision. It was a surprise when he’d nearly tripped over the small, dark object embedded in the slick grass - he’d thought it was a jagged rock or broken piece of machinery, but upon closer inspection, the offending item was the corner of a small, rectangular box in an unfinished, deep grey. It was tightly sealed and locked, so he’d tucked it inside his jacket to deal with somewhere drier. He plodded on, in search.
