Where Darkness Sleeps
The Little Black Book... An immersion of darkness hovers in a room, engulfing all except the gold encrusted lettering on a small black book on a table. The room expands to allow the moonlight to trickle its way into the room. The room slowly fades back to lighten the darkness to a mere gray illuminating a grisly scene.

The Golden Ticket
She couldn’t believe it. She had spent the last of her paycheck on enough bread, meat and cheese for the week and had $2 remaining. She was feeling lucky, or maybe desperate, so she scanned the store for the lottery machine. The green machine sparkled with hundreds of tiny lights, attracting its prey to take a chance on winning a jackpot. She stopped on one of the five options, the one promising a “$20,000 Golden Ticket” to one lucky winner. The ticket was gold and shiny, it was calling her name. Without a second thought, she pushed the button and grabbed her ticket. She grabbed her stuff and walked the 10 blocks back to her apartment.

Dinner Is At Five
Martha grew up in a very small town. Most people would think they knew but would never really understand how small it really was. Mason, Alabama, was so small that its name wasn’t even known to the other towns around. It had been lost in the growth of the state, from a mostly rural area to a more urban one. The town still had a sign announcing where it started and where it ended, but for the most part, no one knew it even existed. It was just presumed to be a small backroad area of Montgomery.

Childs' Play
"Bang." Winnifred Daemon Hoode, sixteen years old, aimed her pointer finger at the birds sitting in the nearby tree. "Bang... Bang!" She shouted, spooking the birds into flying away. She sighed. The birds were boring. The woods were boring, her life was boring. She walked down the crumbling stone path, aligning the rubber of her boots with the edge of the stones. She balanced herself so that her steps hung halfway off the path, causing the grass to bend over slightly. No doubt by this point her mother was looking for her. Red never understood why. Ever since she was a child she had wandered through these woods. Her mother had given up trying to stop her around two years ago, so long as Red promised to stay on the path. And she had followed that rule ever since, but today was different. Today her mother had forbidden her from visiting her friend Goldie.

The Devil's Playground
It was a chilly, bright, moonlit night. I did not want to be out tonight, but when Gloria, the girl you have secretly loved for years, begs you to come, you could not say no. We trekked through the woods on the same beaten path that we have always used. Although we have been through this trail a million times, there was something eerie about it tonight. A fog started to settle in, and even though the night was bright, the darkness felt darker beyond what you can see.

The Book of Slender Man
Ten year old Jaxon and best friend Tanner ripped down the trail on their bicycles through the woods behind their neighborhood. The boys vaulted over jumps, slid around corners, zipped down narrow paths and raced across shortcuts they knew by heart. They were on their way to the convenience store on the far side of the wooded acres.

The Bus
“Plop, plop!” each raindrop made, as it dropped into sidewalk cracks and empty cups littering the ground. It had been raining all day, falling down in buckets and filling the streets with water. The air was warm and swollen, for a fall day. It was closing time for the workforce and the streets had become hectic. The city went from an enjoyable hum to a monotony of noise engaged with life. Cab horns were blaring, street vendors selling overpriced hot dogs, important people huddled under umbrellas looking for valets, and the sounds of tired feet rushing home to dinner filled the collective surroundings.

Chicken Wing
Ruby’s beady black eyes followed Heidi’s every move as she gingerly patted the dusty shelf overhead. Goosebumps tickled her neck as the sticky cobwebs clung to her fingers. Resisting the urge to run out of the musty chicken coop she tiptoed to reach higher. She took a quick peek at the hen on the perch, unnerved at the hen’s statue-like stillness. Heidi shuffled a little farther into the dimness as the glittery eyes followed her. She needed to find that little black book! The hen silently watched. Heidi knew it was irrational, but she was afraid to turn her back on the old biddy. Swallowing down her anxiety she again hastily patted the shelf. Metal clanged as her fingers painfully rammed a metal box. Ruby’s wings fluttered behind her which spurred her to snatch the box and sprint out the door with squeal.

Peer Pressure
“Jenny, where are you taking us?” I’m not hiding the irritation in my voice anymore. I’ve been following Jenny through tent cities and dark alleys for blocks. Eventually, we’re going to stumble across the wrong person and she’s going to get us mugged with her shiny rings and flashy purse.

I Am Alive.
The hunter left his old, battered truck on the outskirts of the forest. Years of work and toil on the farmland betrayed the flayed paintwork and creeping rust. He did take liberties with how close he drove to his target's den, but the strong winds and mist would help stealth his approach. He crouched to inspect the frozen ground, noting how fast the tracks were disappearing under the next barrage of snow.
