Black Bird
People were screaming, everyone on board flight AA231 was panicking. It was approaching midnight. The flight attendants tried to reassure the passengers that everything would be okay. However, I could sense the subtle change of pitch in one of their tones. That reassurance was merely an attempt to mask the ugly truth, that we are all going to perish. All that can be heard are men crying like babies. Babies, being denied the attention of their unresponsive mothers. As I sat there, buckled into my seat, the terror began to clench my heart. My hands drenched in sweat were clamped onto the armrests, clueless as to what to do. Never had I witnessed mankind in such a state.

Tell Me A Story
Tell Me a Story The bell hanging from the door of the antique store jangled as it always did every Saturday when Jared walked in. The smell of old furniture, books, and dusty objects filled his nostrils and while it wasn’t a pleasant smell it was a familiar and exciting one. He passed by some old jewelry boxes and china cabinets as he made his way to the counter with the shop owner.

It's Mine.
I was an ER nurse until I turned forty and decided I needed a changed. It had been years eating at me; eating at my motivation, slowing my response to patients laying on the hospital beds, some of them bleeding out. They deserved a quicker response and the monotonies of the job exasperated by the years under my belt grabbing scalpels and sponges, dropped bullets and pieces of glass and random other foreign objects people get stuck in them, wouldn’t allow me to move any faster than a baby tortious being devoured by its rival kin. Every time I needed to move, I envisioned my younger sister pulling at my leg; being the rival tortoise. She’d be all sprawled out on the floor with her hands wrapped around my ankles. Sometimes if I didn’t slow enough, she would sink her little teeth into the thin white skin of my ankle.

The Mansion at Oak Hollow
Grace stood in the floor length mirror in a black, 1920's vintage dress. Her blonde hair was gathered up into a loose all-over stack of curls and pinned to her head. Black, satin gloves covered her slender arms and her feet donned a pair of modest, 2-inch black pumps.

Give or Die
I find a man laying lifeless outside a convenience store with with a bundle of money and brown bag laying by his side. I walk up to investigate and see how much money is in the bundle. I try to wake the man up but he won’t wake. I call 911 immediately. While waiting for the ambulance I put the money in the bag and put it in my truck. I could use that money and it’s cash so no one knows I have it.

Ledger
Against my better judgement, I died on a Thursday. There was no fuss about it; one moment I was looking across the sea, there was a blackness, then I was eternal. I barely even noticed. It was a beautiful scene though - me standing there bundled in my winter jacket, clutching my little black book, looking out over the endless expanse of water and ice. The book had been my travel companion up until here. Where “here” was I wasn’t entirely sure, somewhere in the north Atlantic, hundreds of miles from shore.

Shadow Beats
The day was playing out like any other, with the chilly December morning delivering all of its customary weather to the citizens of New York. Damion Ricci, a young man of thirty years, looked past the dark foyer and to the small octagonal window on the right of his front door. He released a heavy sigh as he saw delicate snow flakes tumble past the window pane and nosedive into the cedar bushes below. He hated the cold, always had. Even as a kid he opted to stay inside with his mother anytime the air dropped below fifty degrees. Todays weather was especially irritating as Damion thought on all the work that was waiting for him at the office. Just days before, as he was heading home for the weekend he might add, his boss had pulled him aside and asked him to direct a project organizing designs for several of the company's social media platforms. According to his higher ups, fashion was changing with the season and therefore the social media accounts had to follow. Not that it was going to be a lot of work. In fact, Damion found it all rather easy after being in the business for close to a decade. No, the amount of work wasn't what bothered him. What really bothered him was the repetitiveness of it all. Damion, as much as he appreciated having such a well paying job and the comfortable life it afforded him, often found himself dreaming about what sort of challenges and rewards he might experience if he just had the courage to get away from his everyday cycle of plopping himself down into his office chair and filing the same boring documents, making the same boring conversation with his co-workers, and reporting the same boring overview of the days progress to his boss. God, it would be so freeing to get away from it all. He just knew it would be.
