TCM Film Festival Review: 'Doctor X' and the Horror Films of Michael Curtiz
In his insanely prolific career with more than 170 film credits in just over 40 years in Hollywood and Germany, Director Michael Curtiz made only three horror movies. As is typical of Michael Curtiz, these aren’t merely horror films, they are incredibly detailed, exceptionally well made horror films. Curtiz did nothing halfway in his remarkable career and while Doctor X may not be well remembered today, it’s an exceptional 1930’s horror movie filled with suspense, drama and a touch of comedy to make the scares more fun.

The Road killers
“Just relax and be yourself” said the sexy female voice from behind the lights, “Now….Action.” The short grey-skinned creature with the pointed features and deep- set black eyes shifted nervously on the tall stool. He straightened his high-vis vest and looked into the circular all-seeing eye of the camera. “Erm….I’m Spry, as you see I am the supervisor of the Transport network on the B493”, he held the lapel of the vest out to the camera so the insignia was clearly visible. “It’s a dirty job but someone has to do it, eh?” he grinned, showing sharp dirty yellow teeth. “You see we are a very underrated and unappreciated workforce. Those guys that work on planes, causing all those crashes, well everyone wants to be one of them. But I tell you, in reality mostly their tampering doesn’t work. The mortals they have all these checks and servicing regularly now. But all you get to hear about is all the high yield work. Bloody snobs all of ‘em”,he coughed briefly and spat out a globbet of phlegm on the floor. He then blushed, his cheeks touched with a mild green colour, “Sorry Miss, we don’t see many ladies round here, ‘scuse the manners.”

The Last Josh. Top Story - May 2021.
I've been in a coma for the last six months. I was fortunate, they say. The semi-truck that hit my car killed my mother and my fiancee but spared me. Well, not spared, I guess. I had two broken legs, a shattered collar bone, and I was in a persistent vegetative state for six months, three weeks, and two days. I awoke on April twenty-sixth, two thousand twenty-one.

Dining on Misfortune
George Graham set his fork down on the empty plate with a clank. He folded his hands across his generous stomach and leaned back in his chair, smiling. He loved Chinese food, especially from Moon of China down on Main. He made sure to treat himself to sweet and sour chicken and an egg roll at least once a week. Often, he had it twice. He was lucky he got it at all today, though. When he went to pick up his food, he thought the bag felt lighter than usual. Before leaving the restaurant, he opened the bag and checked inside. Sure enough, those idiots had given him the wrong order. He was enraged. He was a regular customer—they should know better than to mess up his order. He told the girl at the counter as much, and demanded his correct meal and his money back. He'd go back, of course—they had the best food in town—but he told the girl he'd never come back if they messed his order up again. George didn't like when restaurants screwed up his order. It was unprofessional, and worst of all, it inconvenienced him. He didn't like to wait for food.

Let's Party
I woke up on a conveyor belt with a splitting headache and a perpetual ringing in my ears. There was a line of people wearing gloves and aprons, working diligently, and speaking a language I could not understand. The air was humid and the sun had risen high in the sky, shining brightly through the windows. The people were sweating profusely from the heat and humidity as if they had been working all day. There was one man in a business suit standing in the corner, shouting commands in some Spanish dialect. I assumed he was the boss.

Curtain Call
Sloan always found it pleasant having a crowd to herself. The clattering of forks against plates and the echoes of soft conversation flooded Sloan’s ears. It was hard to focus with this much noise, but she enjoyed the ambiance. She liked listening and observing, alone and unencumbered.

The Invitation - A Movie Review
I have a bad feeling about this house party tonight. The Invitation invited guests to the theater is 2015. Reluctantly accepting his ex-wife’s invitation to a dinner party, the atmosphere is unsettling the moment Will walks through the door. The evening does not get any better once secrets are revealing creating tension.

The Insidious !
At 12 midnight I was walking alone after I suddenly came up with my name in class and suddenly I heard someone call my name and turned to the voice. That. I walk right along the highway because there is only one place that lights up the road. The darkness made me feel bad and unfortunately I forgot to need my phone. In fact, this is the first day I went to school because my family is new in this village, Kampung Kubur Sharif, only a few days, no one has my friends to study at home and made me come back and go alone. Personally, I've never done that before and I hope your steps are correct.

Defiant Haruspicy
I am liable, to view those trees whipping like blades of grass in the maelstrom that has found itself atop my lonely hill. If only, if only this lavish home was everything I've ever wanted. Though I live in luxury, every day is lost to me, as I speak with nature in an attempt to find myself. Rather, not find myself, but find the half of myself I so desperately need. I despise them as much as I love them, for they are trapped within a reprehensible maze of which I've never suffered. They had run through it every day for the past weeks, time and time again, screaming for my help. I never overcame that hurdle, walking through the inside of the walls at any junction. I'd simply climb over, as if it were no big deal. So, when I ran in blindly at their especially terrifying scream, it was jarring - harrowing even to move through the gilded stone and shrubbery. I knew now why they got trapped so often, why their blood curdling, awe-stricken cries flew into the night and morning sky with little left of sanity. It was exhilarating, horrifyingly so. It was horrifying, beyond anything I'd ever seen. The way that the branches of nimble shrubs cast shadows of lanky and inky black across a tapestry of possible demises at the hands of forces unseen made my skin crawl. So, I pushed onward, attempting to finally confront this beast I'd so often avoided. They told me the pattern hundreds of times, and I'd basically memorized it, but on the one day I can't remember it they're screaming during my entire search. What lackadaisical providence would allow such a thing, why would this be possible in my own backyard? It made the safety of my lovely home feel torn, feel conflicted. However, in this mired trench that I called a mind, the thoughts started to lose their footing as I heard the screams getting louder. Eventually, I heard them bouncing off of the two very walls behind me. It was like a valley of wind and wolf howls; it was a sauna of sound. It baked my skin so that it sizzled, it raked my ears so that they would shiver. It was a cacophony of evil dichotomy, suffering it for much longer would cause me worse than deafness. Plugging my ears with my fingers ended up more like clawing the flesh from within them. Then, it all stopped. This horrid haruspicy having written for my feeble mind only one answer; death. I began to run, dodging left and right. Was this a right turn or a left? Should I even turn, or should I head straight? Unique, was this terror, as it was only aided by a sound I'd never heard before. The sound of unwavering footsteps. The sound of an end close behind. I began to think about my life, the way that my lover placed their hands upon my shoulders after a long day. The way that I would hold them until my tears dried and heart calmed. My desperation grew, my own cries of absolute unbridled ailment congealing along the horizon as if there truly were a light in the darkness of fear. I began to appreciate everything I could amid these supposed final moments, only to plant my feet on open ground. Is it over? Have I escaped? Is that death that was so certain before.. Is it far now? No, for I feel cold and wretched hands upon my waist and mouth. My scream is muffled as I kick and shove. I escaped, I trampled obstacle after obstacle, and this is how the universe repays me? I almost feel the sensation of being dragged back in, only to have my cheek met with a tender kiss of familiar lips. I turn, shock enveloping me as it did just moments ago, and my face is distorted from raw fear to relieved ire. I slap them, as that's the only instinct I have, and tell them just how scared I was. All they could do, even after turning me white as a sheet with their games, was laugh. I couldn't resist to join in.

Washer & the Worm
Chapter 1: Washer loses a worm Will was having a hell of a day, and it started with him agreeing to fill in for a co-worker. He had feigned sympathy and agreed to cover the shift, even though the employee’s supposed “cold” was a lame excuse to get out of work for a concert. The tickets of which he’d been bragging about for the last couple weeks. It’s not that he was a push over, at least he’d never thought of himself that way, he just knew he could use the extra income and he really had nothing worth looking forward to that couldn’t wait. This opinion was only further validated later when he got a text from Anna. He’d received it at 5:39 pm, just as the dinner rush was starting and the restaurant was descending into madness. It said: “Will I’m sorry to tell you like this, but I think we need some time apart. It’s not you, it’s me, you’re a great guy… I’m just looking for someone with a little more drive, a go-getter you know? Anyway, hope we can stay friends!”. A wonderfully blunt message that’s subtext Will would spend the rest of his shift trying to ignore.

The Boy in the Woods
There was nothing strange about that night that told me something was off, nothing in the air or in my surroundings to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. All my life, I’ve assumed anything strange I’ve seen or heard was just me being paranoid, the result of watching too much crime TV, or my dreams spilling into reality. I’ve always been skeptical, not just of ghosts and demon interaction, but of pretty much everything. It takes a lot of evidence and proof to make me believe someone.

Indulgences
The light catches his smooth dry scalp. All natural, he always jokes. When he was younger he never thought having hypotrichosis would work in his favor. He had too large of a forehead and the absence of eyebrows never helped with that. The glaring stares he'd receive just for existing were near unbearable. He recalls, from what could have truly been a different life, that once he snuck into his mother's make-up bag while she slept off her most recent hangover and stole her eyeliner to draw these shaky horrifyingly too thick eyebrows on his face. But as time went by and he grew more into his body, he grew into being bald. Was pretty damn good looking if he said so himself.
