The Release
THE RELEASE The wind howled loudly as it ran thru the trees. The owl sat high on the tree waiting. His head twisted its full 360 degree, looking, scanning, searching the surroundings for it. He never knew where it would come from. He just waited for that bright green light that shot up into the sky in a flash. His job was to catch it and escort it to its destination. The release, he never knew when it would happen. It just did.

Journals of Josiah Foster. September 5th, 1870 It wasn’t dark out when I spotted the beast. I wish it had been. Maybe then it would have made sense why this shadowy hellspawn was so brazen or perhaps it would have disguised its truest form from my vision in a manner that would have led me to believe it was mostly my imagination. But it was sunny, and not a cloud could I see from the bayou banks.
James LovettPublished 3 years ago in HorrorThe Raven and the Barn Owl
It was night, dark, and all around the barn there was silence. She was suddenly confronted face to face with The Raven. The Raven swiftly flew about the barn in a spiral motion as if to call her attention. She could hear his invitation, taunting her, teasing her, reminding her of her latent powers. Suddenly she remembered, as she could feel the ease and natural pull to simply open her arms wide, spread them as she would her wings and she began to fly. First, running up against the towering barn walls and then suddenly turning, flipping, and soon she bagan to soar as if she never missed a single day of being in flight. The sensation of infinite power returned to her being and body and suddenly she felt alive again. They began to fly in unison, dancing and weaving through the barn and she exclaimed to him, “You see, I can fly also! I have not forgotten!”, and they began to laugh of joy for they were together again, and she was in her true form, free to be and express her love in motion. She had not forgotten how to shapeshift, and he brought her to this place so that she might remember. “Barn Owl, do you remember now my love? This is but one of your abilities. I cannot tell you who you are, only you can discover it on your own. Only you can remember. I can only guide you to the places where you can remember.” He said to her as they both shifted back into human form and fell to their feet upon the barn floor, dust rising as they felt the weight of gravity overcome them once more. “I remember now, the Barn Owl was one of my favorites, oh the sensations, I cannot believe how long it has been.” She said to him as she patted down the sides of her body with her hands, regaining her human sensations.
Night Song
Tis dark. Then again that is all I have know my whole life. So why, I ponder, do the other children think it so odd that I do not mind the night, when even the slightest susurrations my large ears catch? Wet moss and slimy wood quickly dampen my jeans, and the cool wisps of mist redden my cheeks into gleeds, but these trifles bother me little; my body, nerves alight and flaming during the sun’s hours, gives way to my keen ears. As the eyes of a city dweller adjust to the night sky, so does my ear to the evening’s song. Soughing trees- whispering, sighing, murmuring - ease the arms that hold an eternally tapping, tapping, tapping cane. Crisp air swells my lungs, and my posture droops as a weary willow.

Asa was ripped from his sleep by a deafening clap of thunder. Had he ever been this tired before? Surely that was impossible. Yet, he struggled to remember the last time he had awoken without asking himself that question. Couldn’t the storm let him be for a few hours? It felt like years since he’d known rest. A few measly hours of sleep was all he needed to clear his head, then he could finally decide how he would get out of this cursed place. The storm had other plans. With a metallic screech the surging wind ripped away part of the roof directly over the mound of hay he had claimed as his bed. Water began to fall yet he hardly noticed. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been dry, had he ever been dry? It was so hard to remember anything before this endless night.

She stared into the darkness wondering what was rustling behind the bushes. As she got closer the sound of his breathing became louder and she could see a faint fog from his warm breathe in the cold night air. She leaned around the tree so slightly so she would not startle her dark stranger. She whispered to him, "Hello, I am not going to hurt you." As soon as she finished her last word a strong voice said, " How do you know I won't hurt you?" Taken aback by the danger that she now felt she turned around and started to run hoping someone would help her. As she ran through the cold dark night she could feel an unwelcome presence that rattled her to her core. Just as she could see the lights from town in front of her she felt a harsh grab to her shoulder. As she was ripped back the fear of what she was about to see consumed her. All she could see was darkness as she fell to the cold damp ground. As she looked around she could hear the loud breathes of her mysterious person who she had once been intrigued to know but now had a overwhelming fear of what she had been longing for. "Please, I don't want any trouble I just want to go home." As she turned around glancing from side to side she couldn't find him anywhere. She stared out into the dark night surrounding her but could only see faint fog in the distance. She decided to try to get up and run. As she started to lift herself up off of the ground a light but strong hand grabbed her shoulder and dug his long nails slightly into her quivering skin. " I don't think I told you to get up, now did I?" Silently inside of her she let out a scream that she could only hear. " I didn't see you so I was going to leave." "Tonight will not be going as you planned, he said in a menacing voice." You see, I am very hungry and well you seem like you were in the wrong place at the right time." "What do you mean? I have no food with me!" "Oh my darling, you're not understanding you are the food!" Within a second she was ripped to her feet and felt a strong pain radiating from her neck. He was biting me, what was this? Why was he biting her, she thought to herself. "What are you?" She could feel herself getting weak and the lights were starting to fade around her. " I my darling, am a vampire." She could feel herself fall to the ground but could not gain any strength to even lift her head to see who her attacker was. As she lay on the cold damp ground she slowly faded until everything went dark. When she finally came around and opened her eyes she felt like she was finally alone. She could no longer see faint fog or hear breathing, she was alone. As she tried to get up she was startled by a barn owl sitting on a branch of a tree. He called out into the night with a loud screech. They locked eyes for a moment before the girl rose to her feet and slowly drug herself toward the lights of town. As she pushed herself to make it to all the lights she noticed the owl had been following her most of the way. Then without warning the owl flew toward her and then off it went into the night sky. As she approached the highway she knew she only had just a little way to go and felt hopeful she would be okay. Just as she started to cross the highway she heard a familiar voice. " I wasn't done with you yet, who told you that you could leave?"

I woke to the sound of whistling. The wind was swirling ominously that night; like it was brewing something scandalous. It reminded me of what I imagined demons sounding like when they laughed. A chill shot up my spine and I shuddered. I pulled the shroud that I was lying on around me. It was summer, but the night air was cool, and the creepy wind wasn’t helping me regulate my body temperature. I reached next to me for the lantern I had placed there and fumbled around for the matchbox. I struck the match. The flame grew. It swelled largely as it was struck, and behind the flame, I could have sworn I saw something scampering across the ground. A sudden movement. I lit the lantern and closed the latch. The room grew with light as I moved it around, and I stood up from the ground, crunching bits of dirt under my feet as I did so. I could still taste rum on the insides of my mouth and on the sides of my lips as I licked them. The back of my throat was dry as sandpaper. Perhaps a night of solitude ‘away from the town’ wasn’t such a great idea after all. What was that saying, again? You can leave the town but you can’t leave the problem? Or something like that.

Of all the people attending the party, Bella Clearwater chose to dance with the ghost in the room. The Ballroom was stuffed full of people with money up to their ears, but not an ounce of character. And besides, she knew Will. He was the ghost that lived in her library. They had spent many a night talking until the sun streamed through the window. “So, what's her story? The lady in the too-tight pink dress?” Will asked, they had been at this for quite some time, Will would find a person who came off as odd, and Bella would make up a story. “That,” Bella began, “is Duchess McBride. She had been married to the duke McBride, until she realized he was quite boring and old,” Bella leaned in close to Will’s face “so she ran him through with a kitchen knife” if Will was alive, he’d have shivered. “But she’s actually my aunt Marie. She’s not married so she dresses as she likes. Grandmother hates her. Says she’s too eccentric.” Will smiled at Bella, spinning her out. “People must think you’re quite eccentric too, dancing with a ghost?” Bella returned his grin, returning to his grasp, “Well I believe that everyone is at least a little bit mad. I mean, how could one possibly be sane and wear that?” She asked, pointing to a woman who appeared to have a stuffed frog on her hat. Will chuckled “That is a little bit mad-looking” She turned to him. “See? We’re all just a little mad” she explained as Will led her to the edges of the dance floor, where no one could see the girl who seemed to be dancing with herself. Although will couldn’t understand how no one would notice Bella. The way her dark green dress swirled around her feet and made her brown eyes look like melted dark chocolate, and made her olive skin look more tan.Even the way her dark green dancing slippers moved silently across the floor was beautiful. And her hair. It was swept up with emerald pins that matched her dress. And Will thought she looked the prettiest out of anyone there. That’s what made this so difficult. “Will? Did you hear what I just said?” Will shook out of his daze, only to find himself nose-to-nose with Bella. “Er..no?”
