The Visitation
"Are the kids down?" John asked as he took the time to steal away from watching mindless videos on the phone and ask his wife the same question he asked every night at eight o'clock.

I It watched her from the window. Massive green and yellow eyes, slanted in judgement. Greyish brown feathers surrounded its face, hidden in the night. Curved, earlike tufts jutted out like horns from the top on both sides of its head. It watched her with condemnation.
Owl Eyes
We each had our reason for returning. He, for revenge, she for love and I, for truth. I cannot speak for the memories of my siblings, but I can still hear the fire engine blaring, winding up the curvy road so fast I thought it would veer off and add to the destruction of that night. The air was so dense with smoke, I was unable to see that my parents were not close behind me as I ran through the front door, clumsy with lack of sight and air…

The light turned red again after what seemed like only three or four seconds, and, as luck would have it, I was at the same corner as yesterday, with the same homeless man staring at me again.

I cannot get the heat in the car to work. The dial is not stuck or jammed. The heat is just. . . broke. If I knew more about cars or if I cared enough to learn, I think I could fix it. I'm one of those people you know- one that can fix things. All I need to do is learn. Maybe that's how everyone is though- once they learn they too can fix anything. Maybe I'm not all that special in that regard.
Waters Past
One night a young boy named Julian was walking along a path through the forest. His journey was lit by the light of the full moon and the flickers of the lightning bugs who were all around him. He was enjoying his peaceful journey when suddenly he felt something strange. He did not feel the scared or like he should sprint away as if he was being chased. He also did feel warm or happy. Then, just as he felt the wave of emotion exit his body through his fingers and toes, he felt the presence of something in front of him. When he looked up, he saw a large, white barn owl flying in front of him.

You wouldn't think them "barn owls" are so freaky to look at just by looking at 'em - but they are. The fact they don't even "hoot" like regular owls is what really gets at me.

"How is this possible?...I must be dreaming right? I must be dreaming. There is no way I'd be up here especially at this house....wasn't I just....wait.. is that??! OH MY GOD!!"...

As I sat there on the beach, seeing Nayeli’s body swiftly being carried away by the current of the river, I wondered how long I would last without her. I knew I couldn’t simply move on. Things would never be the same. To be honest, in our short time together she had taught me so much. The changes that came with being her friend were more than apparent. Nayeli wasn’t a good person though. I was drawn to her because of the way she made me feel. I felt purpose with her. I had always just wandered through life aimlessly, hoping one day something big would happen to me and give me a reason for living. Nayeli lived life with resolve. I think it would be painfully typical to say she’d lived every day like it was her last, but she truly did. Everyone and everything were a chance for excitement. Being with her was like always being at the top of the rollercoaster right before it falls. She was fire and she lit up everything in her path. I was one of the things in her path and I was ignited. But just like everything must go up, it must come down. She scorched my life, and so I killed her.

The prey had been too sure of itself - too secure of its place in a world which had been lightened somewhat by the brightening dawn. That had always been his time. The time in-between night and day; of quiet and solitude, where all was still and caution lay forgotten. This time had been no different.

Twigs snap under my feet, no matter how much I wish to step silently. My breath turns to fog as it leaves my lips, the cold December air creeps under my cloak looking for exposed skin. I hear a distant shout from behind me, to the west I think, they've found my trail.
