Horror Cult Classic The Gate

1987 Horror Film

By Destini GeyerPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Oh boy, let me tell you about the cinematic masterpiece known as "The Gate." This film takes you on a whirlwind adventure into the supernatural world of backyard mischief and awkward puberty. When a couple of curious kids stumble upon a mysterious hole in their yard, they unwittingly unleash a horde of pesky demons and an army of evil lawn gnomes. Yes, you heard that right—lawn gnomes! If that doesn't scream "epic movie," I don't know what does. Now, as a responsible adult, I must say that if I found a hole in my yard, my first instinct would not be to investigate further. But hey, these kids have a thirst for adventure that I can only admire.

Glen's beloved dog, Angus, unexpectedly dies early in the film. Glen discovers Angus's lifeless body in the backyard, having been seemingly killed by the demonic forces that were unleashed through the gate. The scene is emotionally charged, evoking a sense of grief and loss. The moment underscores the escalating danger

Chaos ensues as these tiny terrors wreak havoc on everything in sight, turning a simple suburban neighborhood into a war zone. Our protagonist, Glen, played by the young Stephen Dorff, armed with nothing but his wit and a trusty Super Soaker, must navigate through a series of bizarre occurrences. From demonic possession to spontaneous rock music summoning rituals, this movie has it all. Glen’s journey is filled with heart-pounding moments and side-splitting encounters that will leave you questioning the sanity of everyone involved.

But let’s talk about the special effects. Remember, this movie was made in the glorious 1980s, a time when special effects were, shall we say, charmingly practical. The demons that come out of the hole look like they were crafted in someone’s garage using papier-mache. But hey, that’s part of the film’s charm! The cheesy visual effects actually add to the fun, and you can’t help but appreciate the effort put into making this movie. Watching these pint-sized terrors wreak havoc in the house is both hilarious and strangely captivating. Forget zombies and vampires; it’s the gnomes we should be worried about!

One of the most iconic scene was when Glen sister reaches for the phone to call the police. The phone catches on fire and instantly melts in her hands. I think this was the first time we saw creative in a horror film. One of the most notable moments happens when Glen's hand begins to transform, and an eyeball emerges from his palm. Overall, the scene featuring Glen's blinking eye in his hand is a memorable and chilling moment.

Oh, let's not forget my best friend Terry, who provided Glen with encouragement, support, and determination. Terry serves as the faithful and knowledgeable sidekick to Glen in "The Gate." His deep interest in the occult, unwavering loyalty, and resourcefulness make him an essential and endearing character. Together with Glen, Terry embarks on a thrilling and perilous adventure, solidifying their bond and showcasing the power of friendship in the face of supernatural threats.

In a final act of bravery, Glen faces off against the ultimate evil and attempts to close the gate that unleashed all this chaos. Floor opens, revealing underground chamber. Treacherous terrain, perilous obstacles. Suspenseful chase, shifting landscape. Test of courage and resilience.

The gate is a hilarious ride through a demonic playground filled with questionable decisions. But it makes you laugh, scratch your head, and wonder why you never thought of using a super soaker against the forces of evil. It’s definitely a cult classic, so don’t miss this gem from the 80s. It's a hellish good time!
