Although this may seem like an obvious forecast, we'll make it anyway: 2022 will be remembered as a fantastic year for horror films. The month of January began with a meta-horror "requel" dethroning a Spider-Man film at the top of the box office. We'll soon be able to watch a brand new Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Later this year, a new Evil Dead installment produced by the wicked pair of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell will smack us in the face like a possessed, severed hand, just the way we like it. We'll also receive the final installment of the latest Halloween remake, and to top it all off, Pinhead, everyone's favorite beautiful sex god, will return.

A slew of original, lesser-known but already highly lauded horror films will battle for our attention in the next year, and while these films—hopefully all of which will be released before June—may fly under most people's radars, we're here to shine a light on them.

THE CURSED

The release date is February 18th.

While every horror lover will undoubtedly be watching the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Netflix on February 18, a brand-new horror that made waves at Sundance last year will be shown in theatres on the same day. This one makes use of a long-forgotten genre mashup: Old-Timey Werewolves. That's right. It combines the period genre with the supernatural to give us a retelling of werewolf lore – a nice contribution to this often overlooked and underappreciated subgenre.

Yes, absolutely. We have spooky scarecrows that are possessed by demons or whatever. Scary-looking forest dwellers

The film takes place in a nineteenth-century hellscape of diseases, pitchforks, and land barons. So, pretty much like today, except that every other person is wearing a top.

STUDIO 666

The release date is February 25th.

The Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl created a bizarre supernatural comedic horror film. We don't need any more information than that. Of course, we'll be there.

A BANQUET

The release date is March 11th.

Another entry was chosen for release by IFC Midnight because these people know how to slap. This one features a single mother dealing with her adolescent daughter, who believes that someone has taken possession of her body and that she now lives in slavery to a higher force, who obviously does not want her to eat. It's all very adolescent.

Someone describes it as a mix of psychodrama and possession horror. Based on the trailer, we'd say toss in some cult horror, too, as it feels somewhat similar to Hereditary—what with the mom and the whole "my teenager's possessed" thing.

There appears to be a lot of ice skating, a sport famed for its capacity to turn horrible in seconds. We've all seen Blades of Glory, right?

UNWELCOME

The release date is March 17th.

What we have here is a comedic horror film in which a pregnant couple from London acquire a mansion in the beautiful Irish countryside, only to be chased through the woods by bloodthirsty goblins because the stupid English people failed to leave a blood offering for the "Redcaps." Or anything along those lines—who knows how goblins work?

The point is that this film looks awesome.

It's got a lot of humor, disturbing stalker sequences, and townspeople who don't seem like the nicest people.

X

The release date is March 18th.

Ti West has directed a number of cult classics over the years, including The House of the Devil (2009), The Innkeepers (2011), and The Sacrament (2012). (2013). Fans have been publicly requesting another Ti West horror for quite some time, and in March of this year, they will be granted their wish! It just goes to show that if you want something in life, you sometimes have to beg for it, which is why we'll never stop pleading with Hollywood for a John Wick movie that also incorporates Godzilla in some way. In our opinion, a big lizard is one spectacular means of transportation.

The film X follows a group of adult filmmakers who wind up filming their film in a remote Texas farmhouse. Unfortunately for them, their hosts—an elderly recluse couple reminiscent of The Visit—appear to be overly interested in the crew's antics. The trailer doesn't explain why, but we're guessing it's because they were denied cameo roles in the pornographic filming on their property.

This A24 comedic horror survival slasher, starring new horror favorite Jenna Ortega (The Babysitter: Killer Queen, the New Scream), seems like pure unadulterated joy. It's campy, it seems to reference everything from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre to It Follows to Shyamalan films, and it has some excellent retro graphics since the plot takes place in 1979, a time of corduroy pants and flannel shirts.

YOU WON'T BE ALONE

The release date is April 1

This film, starring the wonderful Noomi Rapace (Lamb, The Trip), follows a young feral witch who accidentally kills a villager, only to take over her body and see what life is like for non-witchy folk who occasionally use things like soap. She soon appears to be leaping from body to body, experiencing life in different skins and lifetimes. We're not sure, but it all looks quite witchy.

That trailer is now coursing through your veins as well. The film is set in Macedonia during the nineteenth century and has an old-timey accent, but it's nothing like The Witch, where we wished for some baked-in subtitles at moments.

HATCHING

The release date is April 29th.

When the IFC group invests in a film, you know it has a good chance of becoming the next big thing. They've given us everything from Werewolves Within and Relic to The Vigil and Sputnik, just to name a few of their successful films released in the last two years. Hatching, a Finnish monster feature body horror, already has a 91 percent review score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the site describing it as "a message movie in a hard horror shell, Hatching perches between beauty and revulsion—and identifies director Hanna Bergholm as a brilliant new artist."

This Sundance psychological coming-of-age thriller follows a 12-year-old gymnast with an obsessive and controlling mother who discovers an egg and vows to keep it warm until she is ready to hatch.

SPEAK NO EVIL

The release date is yet to be confirmed

Oh, boy. Another psychological thriller with a shocking finale, according to critics who saw it at Sundance. On vacation in Tuscany, a Danish couple meets a Dutch couple, and the Dutch couple invites the Danish couple to come and visit them back home. It's all very European and already sounds terrible.

However, it quickly becomes evident that the Dutch couple is not who they claim to be. And we mean literally because the Dutch guy told the Danish people he was a doctor, only to later admit, "Oh yeah, I lied about that."
