Circus Night 21

Kai was exactly as he should be. A very energetic five year old. He had not yet learned much about himself except for two things. He liked food and loved his mom.

Kai sat in his room taking apart his mom’s phone. His mother called in and gestured for her phone back. He gave it back and began to color. His mom walked out and saw that he had been messing with her phone again. She rolled her eyes and began checking her messages. Kai’s eyes flashed red as a small black bird walked in from his window.

His mother walked in to ask him what he wanted for dinner to see him staring at the bird, “Kai what I tell you about letting animals just come in your room?”

His brown eyes turned red while looking into the bird’s eyes, “Mom, she says that she has heard of me.”

“What?”

“She said she knows someone that can help me control my powers.”

“Kai! Get away from her!” His mother swung at the bird. The bird flew away. “Kai, I warned you before that talking to animals isn’t always going to be a great experience. You can’t just trust anyone.”

“Okay mom.”

She kneeled. “Trust me, Kai. One day you’ll understand. We may not be like everyone else but that’s no reason to show off what we can do. How would you feel about cheesesteak tonight?”

“Ok.”

His mother left his room to go to the kitchen. Kai’s eyes flashed red. He quickly turned around to see a teddy bear with an eye patch on sitting in between the door and closet. He walked over to it unsure of why it was there. He sat in front of it, “How did you get out here?”

His mother felt someone behind her. She picked up the knife next to the stove. Before she could swing back, K grabbed her hand.

“Don’t be foolish. You are too slow. Do you know why I’m here?”

“No but I know why you are leaving.”

“I know that I am leaving now.”

She swung back with her other hand, K was gone. She began to breathe heavily. All she could think was ‘this can’t be happening again’, ‘how did he find us’, ‘why are they still looking for us’.

She darted upstairs and kicked in Kai’s door. “Kai!” She saw that he wasn’t in his room. She began to hyperventilate. She ran into every room in the house looking for him but before she could run out of the house, she heard a flush from the downstairs bathroom. She raced to the bathroom to see Kai walking out. She hugged him tightly, asking him questions about his well being. He told her that he was okay. She patted him down and told him to never scare her like that again. She hugged him then asked, “Kai? Did you wash your hands?” He answered, “No”.

She put Kai to bed and turned off his lights. Kai waited until he heard the door lock before getting out of bed and going under the bed to pull out the bear with the eye patch. He laid in the bed with the bear. He curled up with it as he fell asleep, the bear blinked and looked at Kai.
