Painting "Friday 13" by Līva Jubalte

The neon lights of the city shimmered as revelers gathered to celebrate the arrival of a new year. In the heart of downtown, a grand hotel stood tall, promising a night of joy and festivities. Little did the partygoers know that the countdown to midnight would unveil a malevolence that lurked in the shadows.

Amelia, a spirited young woman, had organized the New Year's Eve party of the decade. The ballroom was adorned with glimmering decorations, and the air buzzed with excitement. As the clock struck twelve, champagne corks popped, and laughter filled the room. The guests clinked glasses, toasting to new beginnings.

Amidst the jubilation, a mysterious figure entered the ballroom unnoticed. Dressed in a tattered tuxedo, the stranger's face remained obscured by the brim of a worn-out top hat. The air grew colder as he stepped onto the dance floor, and an eerie hush fell over the crowd.

The clock's chimes seemed to slow as the mysterious figure extended a skeletal hand towards the dance floor. Unseen forces compelled the revelers to dance with a feverish intensity, their movements becoming increasingly erratic. A haunting melody, unheard by mortal ears, echoed through the room, guiding the possessed dancers in a ghastly waltz.

Amelia, caught in the spectral dance, felt a rising sense of dread. The once-celebratory atmosphere twisted into an unsettling carnival of macabre revelry. She attempted to break free from the unnatural rhythm, but an unseen force held her in its grip.

The revelers' joyous expressions contorted into grotesque masks of anguish. The dance floor transformed into a nightmarish tableau as the possessed guests spiraled into a dance of despair. The stranger in the top hat watched with hollow eyes, his presence a malevolent specter orchestrating the sinister festivities.

As the possessed danced, their laughter turned to anguished screams that reverberated through the ballroom. The stranger's laughter intertwined with the cacophony, a chilling symphony of madness that echoed in the dimly lit hall.

Amelia, her eyes wide with terror, spotted a familiar face among the possessed. It was her best friend, Daniel, his once-smiling face now twisted in a grimace of suffering. Desperation etched across her face, she fought against the supernatural force that bound her, determined to save her friend from the nightmarish dance.

Summoning every ounce of willpower, Amelia reached into her purse and retrieved a small silver locket. The locket, a family heirloom passed down through generations, emanated a faint, protective glow. Clutching it tightly, Amelia focused on the warmth it provided and chanted an incantation whispered by her grandmother in times of peril.

The locket's glow intensified, pushing back the malevolence that gripped the dance floor. The possessed guests convulsed, their bodies released from the spectral dance. The stranger in the top hat, his illusion shattered, recoiled in the face of Amelia's resolute defiance.

With a final incantation, Amelia banished the malevolent force from the ballroom. The possessed guests, now freed from the spectral dance, collapsed to the floor, gasping for breath. The clock struck midnight once again, this time heralding a new beginning without the haunting presence that had marred the festivities.

As the neon lights of the city continued to shimmer, Amelia stood in the midst of the disheveled ballroom, the locket clutched in her hand. The stranger in the top hat had vanished into the shadows, leaving behind a lingering sense of unease.

The New Year's Eve party, once tainted by the supernatural malevolence, resumed its joyous course. The revelers, shaken but resilient, danced into the early hours of the morning, oblivious to the sinister stranger who had briefly disrupted their celebration.

Little did they know that the malevolent force, banished for now, lingered in the shadows, waiting for the opportune moment to weave its dark dance once again.
