Aside from being known as the world’s most haunted house, there are many things that you might not know about the Winchester Mystery House. Here is a list of 9 things you didn’t know about the worlds most haunted house – The Winchester Mystery House:

The Winchester Mystery House is Actually a Haunted Mansion:
Despite the fact that the mansion is better known as a haunted house, it only became haunted after it was completed. According to most reports, Sarah Winchester was a spiritualist and clairvoyant. She believed she was guided by the spirits of the people who had died from the Winchester rifle. She was plagued by visions of them and other spirits, and she was advised by her psychic advisers to build the mansion in order to appease these spirits. However, the construction of this mansion was anything but normal. It was built in a haphazard manner that defied all logic. Most of the rooms were built in a bizarre upside-down fashion, with doors and windows on the ceiling. The house was also built with staircases that lead nowhere, doors that open to the outside, and other peculiarities. It’s no wonder that this strange building is haunted.

Sarah Winchester was a widow, not just a wealthy heiress:
The main reason why people think that the Winchester Mystery House was built by a wealthy heiress is because they think they were both widows with similar personalities. However, Sarah Winchester was a widow long before she became an heiress. Sarah was the wife of William Wirt Winchester, the owner of Winchester Repeating Arms Company. She was married to William Winchester for 15 years until he died of tuberculosis. After the death of her husband, Sarah inherited half the manufacturing company, which was a fortune back then. However, a year after her husband’s death, she inherited the other half of the company after her father-in-law died from the flu. Sarah Winchester became the sole owner of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Someone who inherited such a large fortune would have a big responsibility to lead the company.

It Wasn’t Built in One Year, But Over 20 Years:
Most people think that the Winchester Mystery House was built in one year. Although it is true that the house was built very quickly, it took 20 years to build. Sarah Winchester engaged 33 construction workers to build her house. They worked for 16 hours a day for 9 months every year. There is a lot of confusion about how long the construction of the Winchester Mystery House took place because it was a continuous process. Construction of the house stopped only during the rainy season. Even after construction of the house ended in 1922, the house continued to change and morph. Sarah Winchester added rooms, moved rooms and changed the roofline of the house up until her death in 1922. The construction of the Winchester Mystery House was so long that there are different architectural styles found in the house, including Victorian, Tudor, Gothic Revival, and others.

The Number of Windows and Doors are Confusing:
The first thing you will notice while walking inside the Winchester Mystery House is that there are too many windows and doors in the house. There are more than 650 windows and 1,000 doors in this house. Some rooms only have one door leading in, while some have no doors at all. What could be the reason for this architectural confusion? The reason behind this architectural madness is the psychic guidance that Winchester received from her psychic advisers. They advised her to build many more windows and doors in her house to let in light and air. If you are walking in the house during daytime, you will notice that most of the windows have black curtains. This is because the light from the sun is blinding for Sarah Winchester.

There Are No Straight Corners In This House:
Those who have been in the Winchester Mystery House claim that there are no straight corners in the house. It is true. There are no straight corners in the house. According to historians, the reason for this is that Sarah Winchester wanted the corners of her house to be curved. She did this because she believed that the corners of the house have a bad energy. The curved corners can be seen in the design of the house in many different ways. The main staircase of the house has a curved shape, as do many of the built-in furniture and columns. The curved corners can also be seen in the design of the windows and doors of the house. The walls inside the house are also not straight. They are either curved or crinkled.

There Are 2 Sides to Every Room and Every Ceiling in the House:
There are two sides to every room and every ceiling in the Winchester Mystery House. The room that has a ceiling has a floor. The room that has a floor has a ceiling. This is because in the early stages of the construction of the house, Sarah Winchester built the rooms upside down. The corner of the house has a very distinct shape. It is curved, it is crinkled, and it is messy. The rooms inside the house have the same shape. The stairs of the house also have the same shape. If you go inside the house, you will see that the ceiling has the same design as the floor. If you go up the stairs, you will see that the floor has a ceiling.

There are 27 Rooms with Unusual Shapes and Sizes:
There are 27 rooms in the Winchester Mystery House that are either irregularly shaped or unusually sized. These rooms are the ones that are found on the second floor of the house. The second floor of the house was built in an upside-down manner, so the rooms on this floor were built upside down, too. Some of the rooms have very irregular shapes and sizes because they were built sideways, backwards, upside down, or diagonally. For example, the room with the shape of a triangle is where the servants would sleep. The room that is shaped like a parallelogram was used as a dressing room. There is another room that was built diagonally and is considered as the most unusual room in the house.
