Sukumarakurup

Sukumarakurup (aka Sukumara Pillai) (born as PK Gopalakrishna Kurup) was an Indian fugitive and one of the most wanted criminals in the Indian state of Kerala. On 21 January 1984, Kurup's own death was caused by his brother Bhaskara Pillai, his driver Ponnappan and his assistant Shahu. A person named Chacko was killed in an attempt to forge and thereby claim life insurance.

₹ 8 lakh (US$10,000). The ploy was soon pulled by the police, who arrested Bhaskarapillai, Ponnappan and Shahu. However, Kurup went into hiding from the state in the meantime. Infamous as India's longest wanted fugitive, Kurup has been missing since 1984.

Chacko was forcefully drunk, poisoned and strangled to death and later burnt inside the ambassador's car near Mavelikkara Thannimukkam Punja. Sukumarakurup faked his own death and claimed an insurance amount of Rs 800,000, killing his lookalike Chacko. After the incident, Kurup fled the country and his three accomplices,

driver Ponnappan and brother-in-law Bhaskara Pillai, were sentenced to life imprisonment. Another accomplice of his, Chinnakal Shahu, was arrested but later released on recognizance. He is the only surviving eyewitness to Chacko's murder. According to the police, Sukumarakurup is still on the list of absconding accused since January 1984.

The Chacko murder case is one of the longest running cases in the judicial history of Kerala. In 2018, Chacko's wife Shanthamma told Bhaskaran that she forgives him and others (including Kurup) when they met near the St. Thomas Malankara Syrian Catholic Church in Chengannur.

The Chacko murder case was a case that grabbed media attention in the mid-2000s when reports of Sukumara Kurup look-alikes emerged from various parts of India. As Kurup's remains have still not been found, it is unclear whether he is dead or alive.

After a 12-year search (from 1984 to 1996), his crime victims believe he could be living and doing well in a foreign country, based on what the investigating officer wrote when closing the case: Kurup left the country with his head down for 72 hours. After the murder came to light, he managed to evade the police several times, with possible help from political allies.

However, Kurup, alias Joshi, has been spotted several times in India and police believe he may have already passed away due to serious heart problems. Doctors treating him in 1990 predicted that his condition was so bad that he would not live long after fleeing.
