India's deadliest rail accident was the 1981 Bihar train derailment (750+ killed) After five days, more than 200 bodies were recovered, with hundreds more missing that were feared washed away by the river. Estimates of total deaths range from 500 to 800 or more. By the afternoon of June 12, the government had completed its recovery efforts and had issued an official death toll of 235 passengers (including the bodies of 3 passengers which had not been recovered), with 88 survivors.The cause of the crash is uncertain as the accident was not well documented. The Firozabad rail disaster occurred on 20 August 1995 near Firozabad on the Delhi-Kanpur section of India's Northern Railway, at 02:55 passenger train collided with a train which had stopped after hitting a nilgai, killing 358 The accident happened in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh; both trains were bound for the Indian capital, New Delhi. The first train, the Kalindi Express from Kanpur, struck a nilgai but was unable to proceed as its brakes were damaged. It was then struck from behind at a speed of 70 km/hby the Purushottam Express from ndi Express were destroyed, the engine and front two carriages of the Puri train were derailed. Most of the 2200 passengers aboard the two trains were asleep at the time of the Accident During the reign of Akbar, revenue was brought through the city, which was looted by the Afghans. Akbar sent his army led by Firoz Shah Mansab Dar to make the city a cantonment to collect taxes and the city of Chandrawar was renamed as Firozabad after him. The tomb of Firoz Shah is still present today. From early times, it had glass and bangle works, and small scale industry. The landowners of Firozabad hail from the Siddiqui, Sayed, Manihar, Pathan and the Hindu Rajput castes. Firozabad is located in north central India, in Uttar Pradesh, 37 km (23 mi) from Agra and around 230 km (140 mi) from Delhi, at the northern edge of the Deccan Plateau, at 27°09′N 78°24′E. It is located 164 metres (538 ft) above sea level

On 2 June 2023, three trains collided in Balasore district, in the state of Odisha in eastern India. The 12841 Shalimar - MGR Chennai Central Coromandel Express entered the passing loop instead of the main line near Bahanaga Bazar railway station at full speed and collided with a goods train. Due to the high speed of the Coromandel Express, its 21 coaches derailed and three of those collided with the oncoming 12864 SMVT Bengaluru–Howrah SF Express on the adjacent track. A total of One passenger train derailed on to the adjacent track and was struck by an incoming train on Friday, also hitting a nearby stationary freight train.A massive recovery operation is under way, after hundreds of emergency workers searched the wreckage.The cause of India's worst train crash in over 20 years is not yet clear.Officials say several carriages from the Coromandel Express, travelling between Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) and Chennai (formerly Madras), derailed at about 19:00 (13:30 GMT) in Balasore district after hitting a stationary goods train. Several of its coaches ended up on the opposite track 

Another train travelling in the opposite direction - the Howrah Superfast Express travelling from Yesvantpur to Howrah - then hit the overturned carriages.

"The force with which the trains collided has resulted in several coaches being crushed and mangled," Atul Karwal, chief of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) told ANI news agency.

More than 200 ambulances and hundreds of doctors, nurses and rescue personnel were sent to the scene, the state's chief secretary Pradeep Jena said.

Sudhanshu Sarangi, director general of Odisha Fire Services, had earlier said 288 had died.

All trapped and injured passengers have been rescued. It is not clear how serious the injuries of those taken to hospitals were.

Work to restore the site of the crash begun, India's South Eastern Railway company said on Saturday.
