Explanation - The Instagram And Facebook Shutdown:-

Paris City attracts thousands of visitors yearly, but few know its remarkable history. While the tunnels are called after the Catacombs of Rome, which were erected in the first century by Jews and Christians obliged to perform their funeral rites in private, the Catacomb city of Paris was established in the 18th century to address two secular problems: sinkholes and an excess of dead bodies.

A lot of the City of Light's most renowned structures are composed of Lutetian Limestone, sometimes known as "Paris Stone," which has been quarried from quarries on Paris' outskirts since Roman times. By the end of the seventeenth century, the city had grown so large that most of it was built immediately above the ancient mines, resulting in unstable situations.

In 1774, a large sinkhole on the Rue de l'Enfer ("Road to Hell") swallowed houses, carts, and individuals, who fell more than 84 feet to their deaths. Multiple sinkholes occurred over the following few years, causing alarm and fury. In response, King Louis XVI established the Inspection Generale des Carrieres, or IGC, in 1777 to map and preserve quarries. Chief Inspector Charles-Axel Guillaumot launched a race against time to find material to shore up abandoned mines. An increasing public health crisis has a bleak remedy.

Rome, Capital of the Catacomb City:-

To find catacombs, visit Rome, which has some of the world's oldest and longest underground burial passageways. "Hundreds of kilometres of catacombs run beneath the town and its outskirts," explains Adriano Morabito, head of Roma Sotterranea (Underground Rome).

"Some of the systems are well-known and open to tourists, while others remain underexplored. There are probably a few lost catacombs as well.”

The oldest tunnels originated in the first century. The Jewish community of Rome constructed them as cemeteries. Christian catacombs appeared a century later. Morabito indicates that these were grave tunnels, like the Jewish ones, rather than covert gathering locations for escaping persecution, as historians previously believed. "They were growing bigger and bigger around the graves of saints as individuals asked to be buried close to their religious leaders." All Christians in Rome's catacomb city are the possession of the Catholic Church, and no one is permitted to explore them without specific authorization from the Vatican.

Edge of Wonder from Rise TV, known for its thrilling explorations of hidden histories, featured the Paris Catacombs in a recent episode, highlighting the ingenuity and creepiness of this underground city of the dead.

Kingdom of the Dead:-

In December 1785, labourers began removing bodies from the Holy Innocents at night and carrying them to their new burial place: the old city. It was a practical union, with large underground mines providing an alternative (and more sanitary) storage solution. The "Paris Municipal Ossuary," as the catacombs were formally known, was dedicated on April 7, 1786. Guillaumot's ambitions were temporarily halted when the French Revolution broke out in 1789, but as corpses piled up throughout the Reign of Terror, the city's dead began to be buried straight in the catacombs, which had earned a new title as "The Empire of the Dead."

There are no individual headstones or markings in the catacombs; Parisians of various classes and centuries are interred together.

"The catacombs are a zone for equality. You can't tell the difference between a noble's bones and a pauper's. "Equality in death was originally a Christian message, but in the aftermath of the French Revolution, it now has resonant political undertones,"

Final Thoughts:-

  • The Catacomb City of Paris was created in the 18th century. Its purpose was to solve the issue of sinkholes and overcrowded cemeteries. It was also often overlooked that its name was derived from the Catacombs of Rome.
  • The Jewish community constructed the oldest tunnels in Rome. These cemeteries were built in the first century. But the Christian catacombs appeared centuries later. Against previous beliefs, these catacombs were especially used as grave tunnels preferable to hiding places for oppressed Christians.
  • The Catholic Church now owns all the catacombs in Rome. Only Vatican City's management has the authority to give access to the visitors of the Catacombs.
  • The catacombs in Paris were created in the late 18th century only to resolve the issue of overflowing cemeteries. It was used for storage. Eventually, it became a burial site during the French Revolution. It also earned the nickname "The Empire of the Dead."
