The black Hawk War
The forgotten by Andrea Chronicles

Black Hawk a Sac leader who wanted nothing more than justice for his native brothers and sisters from the heinous acts by the early Americans. The Black Hawk war is what historians called it but to some of the native Americans that survived after generations they call it a symbol and there voices refusing not to be heard. As the first people to step foot on new world soil. The Sac tribe was one of many that called the Mississippi home and for thousands of years that's where they receded in a village named Saukenuk. Once the early settler came they demanded independence from England. The American territories was then given to them and the Americans decided to branch out further west and when they did so they came across more and more natives on lands they wanted to cultivate. Instead of asking the natives they decided to force them into signing a treaty.
The treaty of St louis and in 1804 the treaty was signed resulting in the native Americans such as the Sauk and Fox tribe having to be evicted from their ancestral land. Black Hawk refused to move after receiving his eviction notice and once he and his band went off to go hunting. When they returned home he found a group of settler on his land sleeping and eating in his cabin. Black Hawk sought refuge from his British counterparts and in a twist the war of 1812 began .Black Hawk who fought alongside the British was promised if he did and the British won. The British would push the settlers off his land. In a swing of events the British did not win but the Americans and Black Hawk was forced to agree to the Americans terms and conditions of the treaty. So he retreated to the other side of the Mississippi. He then agreed on a new treaty .After a while his people began to go hungry and because of that the American government stepped in.
The corn treaty of 1831 where the government can insure that The Sauk tribe does not cross the Mississippi without permission. Black Hawk noticed his people were starving and he then decided to cross the river to get more food for his people and once he did that the war that would mark history would begin. On May of 1832 the so called battle between the settlers and the natives kicked off .The native Americans with many strong men against a militia which would be called the battle of Still-man Run. Where hilariously the militia were out numbered but with there guns they thought they were invincible 12 men died that that. The militia fled over the hills and back to Dixon Ferry. Where then they then spread the news of a massive slaughter that took place.
Afterwards a young man named General Henry Atkinson. He was incharge defeating the Black Hawk British band. Of his pride and mishandling his band of misfits would lead to the bloodiest massacre ever recorded in native American history the battle of bad axe. On August 1st 1832 a band of Sauk men, women, and children decided to cross over the river for refuge and most likely for safety of the children. A band of men with guns and horses run them into the river shooting every person they laid eyes on. Ultimately leaving no survivors a young women made basket to let her child float to the other side and sadly that baby was shot as well by a young man with no mercy in his eyes.

It would be Black Hawks last straw and he immediately surrenders. He was taken into custody at ft. Crawford and as a broken man he gave up everything he fought for to the settlers and remained to live his life on the other side of the river. Once he died he was buried on tribal land ,but his bones were then stolen by grave robbers and destroyed. After his death his name has been used in so many business and of course the Chicago Black Hawks hockey team with no shame or regret especially without asking his descendants still alive to this day. His legacy lives on even a statue commemorates him near the river in Illinois. Its not much especially after all the heinous things this country has to done to so many other tribes, but its good to know your history before you support a group of people or at least do research on names before you move to a certain location.
In closing Native American names are every where especially in literally every state so do research in your city and state and learn about the grounds you lay your head on every night. Also Abraham Lincoln was in the war he could care less about the Sauk tribe all he cared about was killing so many Natives in the name of America so he could have something on his resume before running for president especially to get in the good grace of the settlers themselves.
