The Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, has been the subject of debate and research for centuries. Many scientists, archaeologists, and history enthusiasts have sought to answer the question of how the pyramid was built. The prevailing theory, which has been taught in history classes, is that hundreds of ancient Egyptians carried huge blocks of limestone and granite to Giza and built a construction that was great indeed. The Pyramid of Khufu remained the tallest structure on earth made by humans for over 3,800 years. It was composed of 2.3 million stone blocks put together so precisely that a human hair could not pass through the adjoining blocks. The Great Pyramid was originally covered with highly polished limestone, which reflected the sunlight and made it shine like a star. The light was so strong it could be seen from the moon. The pyramid was also unique because it had inner passages going both up and down, unlike the other pyramids. It is the only eight-sided pyramid in Egypt, aligned with the stars in Orion's belt and pointed to the pole star alpha Draconis. Finally, it is the most accurately aligned construction ever created, facing true north. It is exactly at the center of the landmass of our planet, where the parallels and meridians which cross the most land only meet in two places on earth. Despite the prevailing theory, some scientists and people today still refuse to believe that ancient civilizations were that smart and talented. The Great Pyramid has given birth to many theories about how and for what it was constructed. Some people believe it was done with the help of aliens, while others believe it was built to store grain or that it was built by Noah himself. One of the most interesting theories of the pyramid's construction involved levitation, not the Wingardium Leviosa one used by Harry Potter and others in the magical world, but a different kind of levitation that has to do with the power of the human mind and sound vibration. However, new proof has been found to tell us how the Egyptians were able to transport 2.5 ton blocks of limestone and granite for 500 miles to build the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu in 2600 BC. Pharaoh Khufu did not spare money for the construction of the pyramids. They hired the best architects and engineers of the time to be in charge of the construction. Of course, they did not do the hard stone carrying work themselves and gave this task to an army of slaves. A 45-year-old scroll of paper was found in Wadi al-Jarf, a Red Sea port, which shed light on the mystery. It turned out to be the diary of Merer, an overseer of a team of elite workers, written in the 27th year of Pharaoh Khufu's reign. The diary, which was more of a logbook, described the construction process of the Great Pyramid with all the details we did not know before. According to this precious archaeological material, laborers transported limestone from Torah to Giza in wooden boats. In hieroglyphic letters, Merer described the daily lives of workers in the course of several months as they were busy with transportation. First, they had to transform the landscape to divert water from the Nile and direct it to the Pyramid through artificial canals. Then they started transportation of limestone logs from Torah downstream to the construction spot. The journey took around three days. Archaeologists have found evidence of the clever system of waterworks beneath the Giza Plateau, where the central canal was flowing. Seven boat pits have also been located around Khufu's pyramid, to the west and the east of it, between the queens' pyramids and the remaining one beside the mortuary temple. More than that, archaeologists managed to find ceremonial boats, which give a good explanation of the ship's construction process. It is a territory of Chile and is located in the southern Pacific Ocean, making it one of the most distant places on the world map. It is situated 1,200 miles away from its closest neighbor, Pitcairn, and 2,300 miles away from Chile, its governing country. The only means of transportation to the island is by plane, which takes approximately five hours from Santiago, Chile. The island covers an area of just 63 square miles, yet it is home to 887 enormous stone statues. The statues, known as Moai, were carved between the 13th and 15th centuries. They are easily recognizable due to their peculiar faces, which feature long noses, wide chins, rectangular ears, heavy brows, and deeply set eyes. The nostrils of the statues curl in a manner similar to fishhooks. Initially, people believed that the statues were only comprised of their heads, but it was later discovered that they had full bodies hidden underground. The statues are incredibly tall, with the largest one standing at 33 feet tall and weighing 90 US tonnes. However, the tallest statue ever unearthed on the island was incomplete, yet scientific calculations estimate that it would have reached 70 feet in height and weighed approximately 297 US tonnes. The heads of the statues visible from the first site make up 3/8 of each statue's size, while the arms were carved against the bodies, resting in different positions. Most of the statues, 834 out of 887, were carved from a material called tuff, which is compressed volcanic ash. Curiously, all the statues, except for one group, face inland, with their backs turned to the ocean. This may be due to the belief that the statues were protectors of the villagers, overlooking the settlement. The only statues that do not fit this pattern can be found at Ahu Akivi, a sacred place for the people of Rapa Nui. One unique statue on the island is the only one found in a kneeling position, known as Tukuturi. Scientists believe that the statue depicts an ancient singer, with his position resembling the one people took at the festival of Rui. The head of the statue is lifted quite high, and a beard is visible. Tukuturi looks much more human-like than the other statues, with its smaller size and unusual material, red Puna Pau stone, making it stand out among the rest. The mystery surrounding how the Rapa Nui people moved the statues, which weigh a tremendous amount, around the island has challenged researchers for years. When Europeans first arrived on the island in 1722, they found a small local population of between one and a half and three thousand people. This raised the question of how the hundreds of statues on the island could correlate with such a small population. Numerous theories have been proposed, including the belief that the statues were created and moved by aliens. However, this theory has been debunked, as the stone used to build the statues originates from the island itself, specifically from an extinct volcano situated in the northeast of Easter Island. In the 1980s, researchers decided to recreate a statue using only tools that would have been available to the Aborigines. It seemed impossible to move the statue, but an American archaeologist succeeded in moving a ten US ton copy. Decades later, another group of American scientists proved that the Islanders could tie ropes and circle the huge statues, moving them with a walking motion. They backed up their theory with practice, moving a full-sized replica for 330 feet using this method. This idea can explain why Rapa Nui folklore states that the statues were walking with the help of magic, as it explains the way the statues were transported to their designated places. The remaining question is how a handful of inhabitants created such magnificent and numerous monuments. A recent study has been conducted to specify the maximum number of inhabitants during the island's heyday. Titanic
On April 14th, 1912 at 11:40 p.m., the RMS Titanic experienced a catastrophic event that ultimately led to its demise three hours later at 2:20 a.m. on April 15th. The largest ship of its time disappeared beneath the ice-cold surface of the Atlantic Ocean, taking with it over 1500 lives, which accounted for more than two-thirds of all the people on board. The commonly held belief was that the ship had collided with an iceberg, but recent findings by scientists have debunked this theory. The Titanic was an impressive feat of engineering, measuring 882 feet 9 inches long, 92 feet wide, and 175 feet tall, with a usable volume of 46,000 328 tons. The ship had four massive smokestacks, each weighing 60 tons and extending 81.5 feet above the deck. The cost of the ship's construction was 7.5 million dollars, which, when adjusted for modern exchange rates and inflation in 2016, would be equivalent to 166 million dollars. The ship was built by 3,000 men working six days a week from 6:00 in the morning, and it took 26 months to complete. Unfortunately, eight people died during the building process, and 246 were injured. New findings suggest that the original cause of the catastrophe was not ice, but fire. Journalist Sonam Maloney discovered a huge 30-foot long black spot on the hull of the ship, which he noticed after examining a photo taken before Titanic's departure. The fire had been burning for three weeks at a very high temperature before somebody noticed it. Metallurgy experts are sure that such conditions could have easily weakened the metal, reducing its strength by as much as 75 percent. The iceberg hit exactly the spot with the compromised metal, which is one of the incredible links in the chain of the Titanic's tragic what-ifs. There were one and a half thousand bottles of wine, 20,000 bottles of beer, and 8,000 cigars. There were no binoculars on board, which could have saved the Titanic. The binoculars had been locked away in a special compartment, and the only person with the key to the locker, second officer David Blair, was replaced at the last minute. He was in such a hurry to leave the ship that he forgot to hand the key over to his replacement. The Titanic needed about sixty lifeboats to contain all the people on board, but it was equipped with only 20. This was done purely for cosmetic reasons since the deck looked too cluttered with 48. These 20 boats could seat only 1/3 of all the people on the ship. The crew had not conducted a lifeboat drill, which was standard practice on ocean liners at the time of the Titanic's construction. As the Titanic was sinking, the crew sent several distress signals, but a ship sailing nearby, the California, ignored the emergency flare shot in the sky. The captain of the Californian later lost his job after this fact came out, but modern researchers have managed to prove his innocence. The Titanic disaster was a result of criminal negligence, a tragic and unfortunate chain of coincidences, and either fire or ice. It took the lives of hundreds of people and still keeps the minds of scientists busy to this day.
