SEVEN YEARS OF DEVASTATION

THE UNPREDICTABLE FUTURE OF THE RUSSIA-UKRAINE CONFLICT

By Francis MasikiniPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Since more than seven years ago, the ongoing confrontation between Russia and Ukraine has drawn attention from around the world. A huge amount of damage has been done to the area and thousands of lives have been lost in the fighting. The world is waiting in anticipation as the situation remains tense despite numerous attempts at peace talks.

The beginning of the conflict can be dated to 2014, when Viktor Yanukovych, the former leader of Ukraine, was removed from office. As a result of this threat to its regional interests, Yanukovych's close ally Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine. The world condemned this action, and some nations put sanctions on Russia.

Pro-Russian rebels have since fought against Ukrainian government forces in eastern Ukraine, escalating the conflict. Violence, violations of human rights, and the eviction of thousands of people have all been hallmarks of the war. War crimes, such as the deliberate targeting of civilians and the use of weapons that are not permitted, have been charged against both sides.

Due to the involvement of outside parties, the situation has become more complicated. While Western nations have supported Ukraine militarily, Russia has been charged with giving military assistance to the separatists. As both parties use it to further their geopolitical objectives, the conflict has also evolved into a proxy struggle between Russia and the West.

The current status of the was is uncertain. Although there have been a number of cease-fires in the past, each one was brief. Despite accusations of violations on both sides, the most current ceasefire deal was struck in July 2020. There are concerns that the confrontation may worsen because the atmosphere is still tense.

The war has had a disastrous effect on the people of Ukraine. Many more people have been forced to leave their homes while thousands of people have lost their lives. The uncertainty caused by the conflict has had a serious negative effect on the economy, harming enterprises and industries.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict also has had far-reaching consequences beyond the two countries involved. The annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 led to international sanctions against Russia, affecting its economy and trade relations with other countries. The conflict has also caused a humanitarian crisis, with thousands of people displaced and in need of aid. The neighbouring countries of Ukraine, such as Poland and Romania, have had to deal with an influx of refugees and increased military presence on their borders. The conflict has also heightened tensions between Russia and NATO, leading to increased military activity in the region. The unpredictability of the conflict's future has left many countries in the region uncertain about their own security and stability.

Despite the difficulties, efforts have been made to promote peace. The 2015 Minsk agreements sought to put an end to the conflict by enacting political reforms in Ukraine and creating a ceasefire. The accords still serve as a basis for further negotiations even though they have not yet been fully implemented.

The crisis has also brought attention to the necessity of international cooperation in solving world problems. While the European Union has sanctioned Russia, the United Nations has assisted in facilitating peace negotiations. The circumstance has also highlighted the necessity for tougher international laws and rules to stop conflicts and safeguard human rights.

In conclusion, it is uncertain how the crisis between Russia and Ukraine is now developing. The conflict has caused a great deal of hardship for the people of Ukraine and has had a significant impact on the region and the rest of the world. Despite efforts to promote peace, the situation is precarious, and there are concerns that the conflict may worsen. The international community must keep working to peacefully resolve the situation and deal with the underlying issues that led to it in the first place.
