The Alabama Peanut Producers Association (APPA) is urging everyone to enjoy one of America's favorite meals in honor of National Peanut Month in March. In 1941, National Peanut Week gave rise to National Peanut Month.

Celebrate National Peanut Month in March by taking part in this celebration of one of the nation's favorite snack foods.

This tiny legume is incredibly flavorful and adaptable. Peanuts have been consumed by humans since approximately 1400 BC. The legume, which is a member of the Leguminosae family that also contains beans and peas, is sometimes referred to as groundnut. It is an underground plant. The National Peanut Board reports that in 2021, the average person consumed 7.9 pounds of peanuts. That is an incredible quantity of peanuts!

According to The Peanut Institute, peanuts are the plant with the highest protein content of any nut, offering an astounding 8 grams per ounce. Recall that it's not a nut! Trees are home to nuts. Antioxidants abound in peanuts as well. This goober (as they're called in the south), is also high in vitamins E and B6, but they’re rich in minerals such as magnesium, iron, and zinc. Studies also reveal that this great legume improves our ability to absorb nutrients when combined with other foods high in nutrients.

The late 1800s and early 1900s saw the development of revolutionary discoveries and technology that made it easier to farm the peanut. Dr. George Washington Carver, who is regarded as the Father of the Peanut, was one such donor. In 1916, he published "How to Grow the Peanut and 105 Ways of Preparing it for Human Consumption," the result of his thorough research into the peanut. His persistent curiosity led to peanut applications beyond only culinary ones.

The background of peanuts

The peanut is a nutrient-dense food that contains over thirty different vitamins! Furthermore, they are superior to broccoli, carrots, and green tea as one of the world's greatest providers of antioxidants!

These mouthwatering legumes were first recorded as far back as 8000 years ago in Peru. When the conquistadors got to Tenochtitlan, they saw peanuts portrayed in artwork and for sale. From there, traders from Europe dispersed the peanut throughout the world, where it is now grown practically everywhere that the environment is suitable.

All around the world, peanuts are used in cuisine for everything from simple snacks to main entrees and even desserts. Even more similar to Cheez Doodles, but flavored with peanut butter rather than cheese, are the Bamba Puffs snack found in Israel.

It is customary in the American South to add a handful of peanuts to a bottle of coke for flavoring, since the combination of crunchy, sweet, fizzy, and salty notes is said to be ideal. These tiny legumes are really quite beneficial.

As folic acid has been demonstrated to lower birth abnormalities when taken by moms before conception and in the early stages of pregnancy, peanuts are a great source of this vitamin. Additionally, peanuts and peanut butter have been shown to be a beneficial component of diets that can lower blood pressure and prevent adult-onset diabetes in recent study studies. By nature, peanuts and peanut butter are free of cholesterol. In fact, as part of a low-fat diet, eating nuts and legumes on a daily basis lowers the risk of heart disease, according to research from some of the nation's most prestigious universities.

Because peanut oil contains a high percentage of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat, it is also a healthy option for regular use. Peanut oil has a distinct flavor that isn't overbearing.
