Will Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool Take Over Stan Lee’s MCU Cameos?

Will the Merc With a Mouth Blend Into the Background?

One of the most beloved, long-running Easter eggs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been the Stan Lee cameo. Stan Lee’s career as a comic book writer, producer, and publisher has been nothing short of iconic in American pop culture. He has earned the respect of generations of fans of the Marvel comics and films. But Stan Lee won our hearts even more, every time we saw his face in each of the Marvel film adaptations.

The world mourned the loss of such a brilliant and inspiring mind in 2018 when Stan Lee passed away at nearly 96 years old. There are many reasons the world will never be the same without him. One of the biggest questions on the fandom’s mind is what will happen to the cameos we all loved so much. Will some depiction (archive footage, images, graffiti a la Deadpool 2) of Stan Lee still be included? Will they move forward without him?

Stan Lee’s long history of cameo appearances begins long before the current Disney-owned Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Stan Lee’s cameos are not just limited to the official Marvel movies either. Fans love the MCU cameos. But the ones included in the X-men movies, Fantastic Four, and original Spiderman trilogy, to name a few, are just as beloved. In this article, I considered attempting to rank all of the Stan Lee cameos in the MCU. I quickly found out this was not an original idea! Instead, I encourage you to head over to The Wrap for this thorough and nostalgic ranking of all 37 of Stan Lee’s Marvel movie cameos!

But still, what is happening for future MCU projects? There may be an answer on the horizon! There have been rumors, thoughts, and ideas circulating since shortly after Stan Lee’s passing. So far, nothing seems confirmed. I have waited and watched since the new wave of rumors appeared for the story to develop more. The only direct source I could find was where We Got This Covered was in communication with Roger Wardell, “who’s got a proven track record when it comes to Marvel scoops.” Wardell allegedly shared that Marvel is “considering” having Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool pick up the baton laid to rest by the king of Marvel himself. The same bit of information shared that Stan Lee would also continue to be represented, just in smaller, more subtle ways. However, this information “leak” is the only thing that I have been able to find that indicates either of these cameo appearances in future MCU films could be a reality.

While there is nothing concrete, fan petitions are dating back to the same week that Stan Lee died in November of 2018, calling for the Merc With a Mouth to take up the mantle. I have scoured the internet for an opposing view as far as the MCU fans are concerned. All that I have come up with is one Reddit thread that hopes they carry the Stan Lee cameos forward using depictions of the comic mastermind rather than allowing Deadpool to take over.

I, personally, wonder if allowing Deadpool to carry on the cameo tradition would be a good fit. Stan Lee was able to take on various background characters that fit seamlessly into whatever was going on in the scene. It would be all but impossible for the red and black suit breaking the fourth wall to blend in and allow the scene to carry on in the same way. But my favorite fan suggestion was to have Deadpool quietly hanging “Missing” posters with Stan Lee in the background. If Reynold’s and MCU do move forward with the cameo takeover, I’m sure I will love every stolen second of it! I’m just curious to see how it will all unfold!

What do you think? Have you signed one of the petitions yet for Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool to take over for Stan Lee’s Marvel Cinematic Universe cameos? Do you have any concerns? Do you think they should continue to pay homage to Stan Lee on his own? Let us know what you think and stay with us! We’ll keep you updated if anything more concrete comes about! In the famous last word of Stan Lee himself, “Excelsior!”
