Why You Should Read More

An Opinion from an Overzealous Bibliophile

Do you want to know how serious I am about reading? Bibliophile, the word printed on the plate, residing on the front of my car, will tell you as much. Not to mention that it is ironically spelled wrong "Bibliophle" instead of "Bibliophile" as there was not enough room for one letter, and the "i" was on the chopping block. To the average eye though, you probably wouldn't notice, but to the reader's eye, it's a whole different story. Look at me using puns.

It's true though, I am a reader through and through, and I'm here to tell you about why everyone should pick up a book!

First of all, I know not every person out there has the patience to sit down and read a book, and maybe not even a couple of chapters. However, I encourage those of you who just can't stand reading to bear with me. While you may not like reading books, that doesn't mean you should avoid reading altogether.

Reading can be as small as taking the time to go through the news each day, as I do regularly. Granted, it might not be the wordiest news sources, because I have other mediums of taking in knowledge that I practice regularly. I know there are some people out there though that have less of an issue with reading, but more of a problem with the time it consumes or even getting motivated to read in the first place.

If this is your problem, stay tuned for an upcoming article on how to read more! As you can tell this is one of my favorite subjects to touch on.

But back to the issue at hand, before you start making time in your day to read more, I can see why many of you might need to be persuaded. Or maybe you think you'd love to start reading again, but it can just be so hard to find the right reasons. Well, I will lay them out for you.

1. Reading Is A Break: Okay, now you might be thinking, how is reading anything like a break when it takes a conscious effort? To be honest, there are times when even I cannot stand the idea of picking up a book to read (I know super surprising). But there are those times also where I just need an escape, and a good book can be the answer to my prayers. Luckily I happen to always have tons of options on my shelves 24/7. While this might not be the case for readers starting out, one good book can get you far.

2. You Get Something From Everything You Read: Every book has something to take from. Yes, lots of books just don't make the bar, however, this means that you learn more and more about what you like to read, and what you really don't. It can be hard sometimes to get through some books, and it happens to everyone, even the most aged book worms. Everyone has preferences, and that means if you really aren't feeling a book, then you should put it down! No need to keep something in your life that isn't making you happy.

The purpose of books, just like any other form of entertainment, is exactly that, to entertain. So while you do learn something from even the worst books you read, don't let the worst of the bunch ruin reading for you.

3. You Have Options: I'm not talking about genres, because yes, there are a billion of those, but what I really mean is you have options as to how you read. Now I happen to be a physical book person, but some people like having the convenience of carrying books inside of their laptop, phone, or tablet. Not to mention that this option is way cheaper than the alternative I use. Of course, I could never give up the feeling of holding a book in my hands, however, some people that didn't grow up with this find it much easier to download ebooks or even audiobooks.

There is this huge debate within the book world as to what counts as reading. I personally don't feel that audiobooks are actual reading, but you get the same knowledge out of it, so if this is your thing, go for it! Everyone is different, and so there are methods for every type of person.

4. Knowledge: Yes, this reason is super cliche, but also a super important part of reading. Because not only does reading allow you to gain knowledge through the books you read, but it also makes you a more conscious reader when it comes to digesting things as a student. As a college student, I find that the more I read, the more I understand texts that come from educational sources. It helps to have that as a support system, as almost every college course deals with a ton of reading.

5. Reading Can Be Fun: If you find the type of books you like to read, reading can become less of a chore, and more of something you look forward to doing every day. While at first, it may be daunting, as any new skill or activity is, over time it can become a much-needed escape at the end of the day. I promise, there are always times where you may feel like you're not up to reading, and we call that a "reading slump," but it is normal for all of us. Just like any other hobby, sometimes you feel like you need a break, and when that happens, you definitely should. The best cure to a reading slump can also be just finding your next favorite novel to get you interested once again!
