What We Know About 'Deadpool 3' Thus Far

It's Moving Forward!

Deadpool 3 is going to happen! Here is what we can tell you thus far.

Marvel Studios is going ahead with the third movie featuring everyone's favorite Merc with a Mouth. 20th Century Fox launched the franchise in 2016, forever changing the landscape of comic book-based films. Deadpool fans finally got the action-packed, R-rated antihero we deserved. Ryan Reynolds redeemed himself as an action hero and made good on a promise to right the wrongs done to Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The first Deadpool film made $783 million off of an estimated $58 million budget. It was a financial success that resonated with critics, comic book fans, and average moviegoers alike. The second film in the series, Deadpool 2, was released in 2018. Though it was not as critically successful as its predecessor, it still made $785.8 million off a $110 million budget.

Disney began talks of acquiring all of 20th Century Fox's good bits amid the second film's release. When the Disney-Fox merger was complete, Marvel comic book fans like me felt whole again. That euphoric feeling lasted a few milliseconds. It gave way to panic. What would the House of Mouse do to the X-Men and Deadpool franchises? Surely enough, Disney announced the end of many planned films for the X-Men IP previously handled by Fox. Series that were already airing would also wrap. The Deadpool 3 film was officially in limbo until a few days ago.

Ryan Reynolds will, of course, reprise his role as the titular character. Deadpool 3 will be an R-rated film, making it the first such rated film from Marvel Studios. It is unclear if and how the studio will connect Deadpool to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Since the character is known to break the fourth wall and has literally killed off the entire Marvel roster in the comic books, it would be relatively painless to place him in a shared universe.

The rating difference between the MCU and Deadpool franchises thus far should not play a factor. Disney and Marvel can use this opportunity to bring a little more to the MCU. I am not suggesting that they erase the hard-fought, hard-won progress made for female characters. I am suggesting Marvel Studios inject more realistic action into MCU movies. No one is getting "fridged" on our watch ever again.

With Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin of Bob's Burgers set to write Deadpool 3, we can bet that this trope will not happen. After Marvel Studios, Reynolds, and Team Deadpool waded through numerous pitches, the sisters won the writing job. As a huge Bob's Burgers fan, I cannot wait to see what the sisters have in store for Deadpool.

The director's chair is still a bit of a mystery. There have been talks that Deadpool 2 director David Leitch may take the helm the third film. Though it will likely be someone entirely new given that Leitch's dance card is full until 2022. He was also not part of the script search team.

Fans and the industry as a whole are eager to see how this plays out since the actual Marvel Universe is finally under one roof either by acquisition or permission. Kevin Feige's involvement guarantees that the Marvel fans will not be disappointed. Industry insiders are watching Disney closely to see how it will successfully navigate and reconcile the massive IP bundle inherited from the Fox merger.

Wall-breaking characters like Deadpool breathe life into long-running cinematic sagas by helping new fans catch up while sharing insider jokes with those who have been there from the beginning. We cannot wait to see what Deadpool will do. I can smell the chimichangas already.
