As the subtitle states, this is my impression of Ciaphas Cain omnibus #1. For those of you who don't know an omnibus is a collection of novles compacted together.

Before I get to my first impressions I will give a summary of Warhammer 40k.

Warhammer 40,000 (Warhammer 40k) is a sci-fi series that takes place in the 41st millennium. It takes place in a dystopian galaxy where there is endless war. (For the sake of simplicity I will only touch upon bits of the Warhammer 40k lore).

In this universe there are some dominant factions throughout the galaxy. I will touch upon three that is relevant to this post.

There is the Imperium of man. They are the "good guys" of the universe who wish to rule the galaxy in an authoritative manner while emphasis on the religion of worshiping the Emperor of mankind.

There is the chaos cults. They are the "bad guys" of the universe. They are the ones who got corrupted by what is called the warp. In the warp there is this negative energy called chaos.

There is this faction called Xenos. Xenos are basically the aliens in the universe. There is a multitude of alien species.

For more intel on the Warhammer 40k Lore you will have to do your own research. Warning the amount of lore is insane and there is no starting point.

Now to my first impressions of the Ciaphas Cain and his omnibus. You can tell by the cover of the omnibus that the man who did a number on the alien is the main focus. That man is Ciaphas Cain and the alien is called an Ork.

Ciaphas Cain is part of the imperial guard, one of the military factions within the Imperium of man.

What makes Ciaphas Cain very intriguing is that he is a poster boy for the imperuim of man but not in the normal sense. He is in reality a bastard. He is deadpool without powers or mutations. Yet, he is in a sense comic relief in a very dystopian world. Ciaphas Cain himself is not a comedian but his actions and circumstances is what brings the dark humor into light. Ciaphas Cain is just a guy doing his thing while people indirectly and directly in and outside of the Imperium of man want him dead.

If there is one phrase to describe Ciaphas Cain is that he is a heroic scoundrel.

Definitely recommend this omnibus for those who are tired of the stereotypical/predictable hero, who love anti-heroes and want a twist while having a good laugh here and there.
