The first full trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder is finally here. While we got just a brief shot in the film's first teaser, the new trailer gives us a much closer look at Jane Foster in her new role as the Mighty Thor, as well as the new character dynamics brewing between Jane and the original Thor.

While praising the look of Jane as Mighty Thor, many viewers have taken note of the fact that, two trailers down, we have only seen Jane in her Thor form. Comic-savvy fans believe this detail hints at a potentially devastating plotline lifted straight from Jane's The Mighty Thor comic run.

The Mystery of The Mighty Thor

Following the 'Original Sin' comic storyline, the character most fans know as Thor is rendered unworthy, losing the ability to wield Mjolnir. Shortly afterwards, a woman appears wielding Mjolnir, and with it, the power of Thor. While the original Thor, now going by the name Odinson, is at first eager to reclaim Mjolnir, he gives up his claim on the hammer, and the title of Thor, after seeing his successor prove her worth in multiple battles. However, she does not reveal her identity to him. Eager to discover who Mighty Thor is, Odinson makes a list of likely suspects and begins to investigate.

Unfortunately, not all Asgardians are as accepting of the new Thor as Odinson. Odin and his brother, Cul, are furious to discover that Mjolnir is in the hands of a lowly Midgardian. Viewing Mighty Thor as an impostor, Odin sends Cul and the powerful Asgardian mech-creature, The Destroyer, to eliminate her and bring Mjolnir back to Asgard.

Mighty Thor struggles to fend off The Destroyer on her own, but is saved when Odinson and his Mother, Freyja, lead a team of the Marvel universe's greatest superheroines (summoned via Odinson's list of potential Thors) to her aid. Odinson believes he has narrowed his investigation down to a single suspect, S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Roz Solomon, and after the battle is won, begs 'Roz' to reveal herself to him.. moments before Roz arrives at the scene of the battle, having had other engagements at the time of Odinson's initial call for help.

Odinson ends the early phase of the Mighty Thor story arc no closer to knowing who his successor actually is.

The Price of Being Worthy

Sometime before he became unworthy, Odinson had reached out to his former love, Jane Foster, and invited her to Asgard to represent Midgard, aka Earth, in the Council of Worlds. He visits Jane early in his investigation into the identity of Mighty Thor, but quickly discounts her as a suspect after learning that she is suffering from Cancer. Jane is seemingly absent for the rest of the story arc involving Odinson's investigation until the twist reveal at the end of The Mighty Thor's first volume reveals that Jane is, in fact, the new Goddess of Thunder, chosen by Mjolnir itself.

Unfortunately, the power of Thor comes with a price. While picking up Mjolnir and becoming Mighty Thor temporarily frees Jane from her disease, the transformation also purges her body of all toxins.. including the Chemotherapy drugs used to treat her Cancer. Each time she reverts from Thor back to Jane, her health takes a significant hit. Jane is eventually forced to make a difficult choice, between her own life, and her responsibilities as Thor.

Is Jane unwell in Thor: Love and Thunder?

The MCU is clearly going a slightly different route with Mighty Thor's story, as the latest trailer for Love and Thunder seems to suggest that the original Thor recognises Mighty Thor as Jane soon after seeing her wield Mjolnir. However, some fans are taking the fact that we are two trailers down and have not seen Jane untransformed as proof that she may be hiding a Cancer battle from Thor.

Some possible plot leaks have suggested that Jane originally travelled to New Asgard either as a Bucket List item, or specialised treatment after becoming ill, and stayed on after discovering/repairing Mjolnir and becoming Mighty Thor. If Jane is in fact ill, it could provide a tear-jerking twist at some point in the film, especially as the latest trailer implies that Thor may still have unresolved feelings for Jane.

We'll have to wait until Thor: Love and Thunder hits theatres in July to see how it all unfolds.
