After a longer than usual wait, fans have finally been treated to the first teaser trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder. The film breaks new ground in multiple ways, including making Chris Hemsworth's Thor the first MCU character to have a fourth solo film, and re-introducing Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. Love and Thunder will see Jane take up a repaired Mjolnir as the new hero Mighty Thor.

Jane has also been Mighty Thor in the comics, though this was not immediately obvious. Mighty Thor appears with Mjolnir in hand, shortly after the original Thor loses his worthiness. Thor, now going by Odinson, begins searching for the identity of Mjolnir's new wielder. At first this is born from a desire to reclaim Mjolnir for himself, but later, after accepting the new Thor is the best person for the job, Odinson simply wants her identity to protect her from the wrath of Odin, who is upset to see Mjolnir out of his son's grasp. Unfortunately for the Odinson, his investigation is not easy.

Here are some of the characters Odinson suspected of being Mighty Thor.

8. The Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, has one of the most checkered histories in the MCU. While a hero more often than not, a few mental health battles resulting from overuse of Wanda's reality warping powers mean she is also responsible for some truly epic disasters, including the Avengers Disassembled storyline, and the mass depowering of Mutants in House of M.

However, imperfect does not necessarily mean unworthy, as Odinson knows all too well, so Wanda still earns a place on his list of possible Thors. While Wanda proves not to be Thor, she does prove her heroism by accepting Odinson's summons to help Mighty Thor in a brutal battle against a group sent by Odin to take Mjolnir from her. Wanda spends most of said battle fighting alongside Black Widow.

7. Black Widow

With her dark past, Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, is almost definitely unable to wield Mjolnir. She mostly earns a spot on Odinson's suspect list once he is beginning to run out of options, and is quickly eliminated from the investigation via S.H.I.E.L.D intel.

While she may not be worthy, Natasha has still earned her place among the heroes, joining many of her fellow heroines when Odinson summons them to help Mighty Thor fight off a crew of angry Asgardians. She spends much of the ensuing battle debating with the Scarlet Witch on the best way to breach the defenses of the Asgardian Destroyer.

6. Spider-Woman

Jessica Drew, the hero known as Spider-Woman, was mostly considered a potential Thor due to a few mystical elements in her past, including an early childhood at the foot of the magical Mount Wundagore, and a connection to the Darkhold, an ancient book of dark magic.

Unfortunately for Odinson, Spider-Woman was crossed off the list courtesy of S.H.I.E.L.D. Around the time of Mighty Thor's emergence, Jessica Drew shared a close friendship with, and often worked alongside Captain Marvel. As such, both women were known by S.H.I.E.L.D to be in different areas at the time of most major Thor sightings. Jessica accompanies Captain Marvel when the women of the Marvel Universe are summoned by Odinson to help Mighty Thor.

5. Carol Danvers

As possibly the most powerful hero in the Marvel universe, Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, seems an obvious suspect in Odinson's search for Mjolnir's new wielder, especially when it becomes apparent that the new Thor is most likely human. However, she is removed from contention early in his Quest, when a chat with S.H.I.E.L.D brings up the fact that Carol has been off on missions of her own during many of the Mighty Thor's appearances. As powerful as Carol is, she cannot be in two places at once.

Carol is one of the many female heroes of the Marvel universe called upon by Odinson to defend Mighty Thor from those sent to take Mjolnir from her. Though slightly wary of the new Thor at first, Carol eventually accepts her.

4. Lady Sif

When his search begins, Odinson suspects that the new Thor is a member of his own people, because surely, an Asgardian would be most worthy of wielding an Asgardian weapon.

Among his other Asgardian suspects, Odinson seeks out his comrade in arms and some-time love interest Lady Sif. Not for the first or last time in his search, Odinson is told that Sif is not Mighty Thor, and unfortunately, does not have any more idea than he as to who the new Thor is. Later, after coming to Mighty Thor's aid in a battle against an angry subset of Odin-loyalist Asgardians intent on taking Mjolnir from her, Sif playfully refers to Odinson as Mighty Thor's sidekick.

3. Agent Roz Solomon

Agent Rosalind Solomon, mostly known as Roz, was an ally of Thor before he became unworthy. A member of S.H.I.E.L.D's Environmental protection branch, Roz often called upon Thor for help in thwarting the plans of the Roxxon Corporation. After a fruitless search, Odinson zeroes in on Roz as his Prime Mighty Thor suspect. She was seen near Mjolnir's resting place shortly before Mighty Thor first appeared, and was often spotted in the area prior to Mighty Thor sightings.

However, these clues are Red Herrings. Just as Odinson is about to confront Thor with his presumed knowledge of her identity, Roz arrives on the scene. The only reason she had been present prior to Thor's appearances was that she was working with her as she'd once worked with Odinson. She is also one of the few people to know early on that Jane Foster is the Mighty Thor.

2. Brunhilde, The Valkyrie

As both a loyal Asgardian and long-time ally of Thor, Brunhilde, also known as Valkyrie, ranked high on Odinson's list of Mighty Thor suspects. The fact that she is the leader of the Valkyrior, Asgard's legendary team of female warriors, only heightens these suspicions, though they are quickly proved incorrect. While it turns out that Brunhilde is not Mighty Thor, she is one of the new hero's most vocal supporters, rallying to her rescue when Odinson summons help for Thor during a tough battle, and standing up for Thor when other Asgardians denounce her as an impostor.

When the Valkyrior are killed during the War of the Realms, a mortally wounded Brunhilde grants the by then former Mighty Thor, Jane Foster, the abilities of a Valkyrie, trusting her to carry on the Valkyrior's legacy.

1. Jane Foster

Sometime before the first appearance of the Mighty Thor, Odinson had reconnected with his former flame, Jane Foster, and invited her to serve as Midgard's representative in the newly formed Council of Worlds. She is one of Odinson's first suspects as the potential Thor. However, he eliminates Jane from his investigation after learning that she is suffering from Cancer, believing that, in her weakened state, she could not possibly be Thor.

Unbeknownst to Odinson, Jane was in fact the new Thor, chosen by Mjolnir itself. When she lifts the hammer, she transforms, the effects of her illness purged as she gains the power of Thor. On the downside, the transformation also purges Jane's Cancer treatment from her system, leaving her closer to death after each stint as Thor. Odinson only learns the truth when Jane's health situation becomes so dire that even one more transformation will most likely kill her. When Asgard falls under attack, Jane takes up Mjolnir for what she believes will be the last time. She collapses following the battle, but is revived thanks to the combined efforts of Odinson, Odin, and the God Tempest Storm within Mjolnir. Recommitting herself to winning the battle against her Cancer, Jane encourages Odinson to retake the mantle of Thor.

Later, after her disease enters remission, Jane comes to Thor's aid during the War of the Realms, using a Mjolnir from another universe. While this hammer is destroyed in battle, it re-forms and bonds to Jane in the form of a bracelet that can transform into any weapon she desires. Then, a dying Brunhilde grants Jane the powers of a Valkyrie, giving her enhanced strength, transforming her physiology from human to Asgardian, and allowing her to escort departed Asgardian souls to the gates of Valhalla. With Brunhilde and the rest of the Valkyrior dead, Jane becomes the only living Valkyrie, and takes the responsibility of this position just as seriously as her time as Mighty Thor.

We'll get to see Jane Foster in action as Mighty Thor when Thor: Love and Thunder hits theatres in July.
