The Shows That Got Me Through Covid

What shows/music got you through the most recent history-making global crisis?

I feel like we don't talk about the Covid years a lot. I feel like a lot of us have pushed those dark times under the rug and we are just praying that we never have to go through it again. Sometimes, it can be hard to revisit the dark times.

There were so many deaths during 2020, and during that time I myself was not only enduring the isolation of quarantine but I was flipping back and forth between it just being me and my daughter, and us sharing our space with someone who was an extremely toxic stressor in my life.

Covid was hard enough, but a lot of us who have shadows in our homes struggled even more than the regular off-the-top hardships that came with it. I felt like I was trapped, and I was brought to the brink of giving up who I was, I felt I had lost my way. I wondered about the people who were in abusive or toxic relationships. As the rate of COVID-19 deaths rose, time went on and so did the rate of suicides. But it was swept under the rug by hospitals who were taking kick-backs for Covid deaths. It got to the point where many of us were crying out in rage that was silenced because truth and justice were being trampled on by greed.

We don't talk about it enough. Because that period of time was so hard and so dark that it's like looking into an abyss when we think back to those times. So instead of sharing tales about the hardships of that time, I'll gently open the can of worms by sharing some of the TV shows that got me and Sky through the craziness, who was only two and three years old at the time.

The Masked Singer

This show...It had only started the year before but I caught it right as season 3 ended, and I was able to stream every season. I binge-watched this for weeks. I LOVE this show to this day. During Covid, I remember watching this show and actually laughing as I watched it. It was so much fun to guess which celebrities were under the sparkly, giant, crazy costumes.

I love this show to this day for everything it stands for. It is unique, creative, and SO much fun to watch and listen to. But what inspired me was hearing the stories of the contestants of this show. You would hear stories of personal tragedy, successes, downfalls, and rises. But each and every contestant who has ever been on this show has been inspired. It transformed them and touched them in some kind of way. For some it healed years of trauma, being able to tell the story anonymously at first and then reveal who they are. Some it helped rekindle their love for their career. For some it taught them they could do thing they NEVER thought that they could do.

It heals wounds, reveals truths, and allows you to see an intimate side of people you would never expect to ever have insecurities or worries.

It brought me a lot of hope and joy during a time when I was really, really alone. The judges are Robin Thicke, Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger - and it's an amazing combination. I hear Rita Ora will be taking over for Nicole this coming season since Nicole is starring in a production that is taking her time. You can stream most of the seasons on Hulu.

Bluey

I don't care if you're an adult or a kid, Bluey is an amazing show. I can't help but love this show. I used to live in Australia for a time, and I loved it there. So much. It felt like home when I was there. So when I watch this show, I do get struck with a sense of longing to go back one day.

Not only that, but I love the groundedness and reality of Bluey. I feel a lot of American shows censor a lot of reality out of their shows. But Bluey has episodes that show Bluey and Bingo learning to deal with failure, death, grief, and loss. I appreciate that Bluey has a more practical approach than a lot of American shows, and it has amazing messages of perseverance, acceptance, coping, family, and love.

This is important to me as a mom, as I want to expose my children to these things as early as possible. I don't want my child growing up with a shroud of ignorance over their eyes, so Bluey has my full mom approval.

Mickey Mouse Roadster Racers

She was only two. All she wanted to watch all day every day was Mickey Mouse.

And you know what? It wasn't horrible. My son is obsessed with Cocomelon, and can I just say? I LONG for the Mickey Mouse days.

Glitter Force

One day I got tired of Mickey Mouse. So I exposed my daughter to anime. I found this and put it on for her, and ended up becoming invested as a Weeabo generation kid. It reminded me of some of my childhood anime moments, which led to the next show on my list being rewatched on my own at night with unhealthy snacks.

Sailor Moon

I watched this with Sky. But I'll admit, I started it on a night I couldn't sleep and watched like 8 episodes just because Glitter Force had made me think about this show earlier in the day.

Vampire Diaries

I'll be honest. After 6 seasons of people dying and coming back to life, I skipped ahead when Elaina went into a coma and watched the final episodes.

It was a good story, it just dragged on a very long time. The last episode was a tear-jerker, however, and I thought it was a wonderful ending.

Lucifer

Tom Ellis was my pretend boyfriend during COVID-19 when watching this show. It's funny, witty, a great take on religious stories, and it has a good story. This was a binger at night when I couldn't sleep and I needed to drown out my worries.

I had a very different covid summer to most… i guess the bonus of being alone in the world is that I didn’t know people dying, but the other side of that was trying not to lose my mind in a strangers house…. When I watched tv it was familiar and comforting programs….I recall rewatching all of Suits, James May in Japan, quite a few movies (gifted, green book - these stood out- probably because both made me cry) But for me it’s really music that I had on all the time… and music videos, music has always been there, getting me through every hard time 🤍✨

I loved Tom Ellis. Since I worked in the hospital during covid I avoided my normal hospital dramas since it triggers me about those days but for the most part I watch a lot of what you mentioned here! LOVE BLUEY! 💕
