On January 4th this year, Netflix through their social media projected that Bridgerton would be watched by 63 million households within 28 days of its release, which would make it the fifth most-watched Netflix original series launch of all time.

So far, the series has managed to hold the number one spot having been watched by and talked about by viewers from all over the world.

Social media has been filled with images, memes, conversations and new fan pages inspired by the Netflix series. Writers have already penned down their thoughts on it and critics who may always find something to complain about have in their critiques also given it to the series for a job well done. Comedians have also already started making jokes about it and its actors have already seen spikes in their social media following.

Fans, myself included cannot wait for the second season.

Movies and television shows have shaped cultures and impacted societies since time immemorial. They capture moments and they help freeze time. They teach, they inspire and they bring people together. Other than just their entertainment value, they impact our lives in various ways.

Here are some impacts that Bridgerton on Netflix has had so far or will have on the world in the future.

Fashion

We should not be surprised when corsets, long gloves, long flowery dresses, wigs and count jackets and other Regency attires become fashionable again courtesy of Bridgerton.

I have already seen TikToks of users ordering some of these items online. Some social media users have already posted images of themselves wearing clothing from the fashion inspired by the Netflix series.

Entertainment

We might start hearing the Duke of Hastings and other popular characters from the show being mentioned in popular music, or being mentioned in other popular television series or movies.

“Stop asking me to marry you. What am I, the Duke of Hastings?” A character might say?

Expect to hear more jokes from comedians about the series. Josh Pray so far has made a number of hilarious videos about the series and its characters which you can view from his social media.

On the actors

We might start seeing Rege-Jean Page in several other entertainment avenues such as blockbuster movies and advertisements. There even has been talk in the fan community of him playing James bond.

From about 70K Instagram followers, he is at 2M as at now.

The social media following of the other great actors of the series has also increased.

The great job they did on the first season of Bridgerton might increase their earnings potential and lead them to be called to other great roles.

Holidays and celebrations

Come Halloween 2021, we should expect to see cosplayers dressing up as the Duke and Duchess of Hastings or as any of the outstanding characters on Bridgerton.

We might also see such cosplayers in costume parties or on social media posts.

On the author

The books the series is based on have been bestsellers, but since the series aired, the sales have increased returning The Duke and I to the New York Bestsellers list.

According to People.com, the books were even going as high as $700 promoting the author to announce on her social media that the books were being printed and that curious readers did not need to pay such high prices for them.

The increased book sales right there is increased earnings for Julia Quinn, her publisher and her entire team. Not to mention the fat cheque she will get from the production team for adapting her novels into the screen.

On related period pieces

For those going through the difficult and painful withdrawal of having finished watching the first season, several fans have recommended that they watch other period pieces and related series such as Pride and Prejudice, The Borgias, the Crown, Outlander etc. as coping mechanisms and as they wait for the second season that might drop sometime next year.

These series are about to have a spike in their viewership and their number of fans because of the great job done on Bridgerton. Bridgerton’s success will also spill over to them.

On history and knowledge

I have found myself going to look up information on the Regency era. Bridgerton made me curious about its fashion, traditions, history and politics and on its beliefs.

I have also seen quite a number of TikToks and other social media posts that try to explain elements in the series such as the costumes, the traditions, the language and the architecture. Information about the mad King in the series who is said to have been inspired by a real-life King George is also a very interesting read.

The author has also shared on her social media that she has been bombarded by the accuracy police who attempt to correct her on the historical inaccuracies in her novels. She adds that they should just chill as her books are fantasy set in a fictional historical period.

On relationships, sex and romance

After watching the love, relationships, the sex, the drama and the romance between the Duke and Daphne, many fans have mentioned that they no longer wish to remain single or wish to be loved plainly.

Comedian Josh Pray notes that even though he does not possess the Duke of Hastings’ good looks, after watching the series, he now feels that he deserves to be loved deeply and that he deserves to be ‘burned for’. He even thanks the actor Rege-Jean Page for helping him come to this realisation.

Those in relationships also might court each other harder, more romantically and more intensely from borrowing tips from the couples in the series.

Couples might now be inspired to spice up their sex lives by having sex in the stairs, in the fields, in inns and anywhere else they deem fit from watching Simon and Daphne’s sexual exploitations.

On other television series

With the diversity, cinematography and storytelling from Bridgerton, other television series will have to work hard to achieve what the series has achieved so far.

As the number one television series right now, Bridgerton has set the pace and become the benchmark for other creatives and producers to follow.

Commercial

With the fashion of Bridgerton being emulated in real life, the costumes being potentially cosplayed at Halloween and costume parties. With the books the series is based on being currently bought in huge numbers, the commercial impact of Bridgerton is well pronounced.

There are lots of people I know who subscribed to Netflix just to watch it following the praise it got. A lot of money will circulate in the coming months as a direct result of Bridgerton on Netflix.
