Robert McCall is a regular man making things right in his own way. As many try to make sense of his background and intentions, he questions the world and the meaning of justice. He works to save various people around him including Alina 'Teri'(Chloë Grace Moretz), Ralphie (Johnny Skourtis), Ralphie's mom (Luz Mery Sanchez), and Jenny (Anastasia Mousis Sanidopoulos).

A spoiler warning is in effect! If you like this, you can get more of my articles when you subscribe to my account.

He works a regular job at a Home Mart establishment but after befriending Alina known as Teri, he makes a decision to help protect her from the people she works for. He fights for those who can't fight for themselves.

He kills Slavi (David Meunier) and his men after his attempt to pay for Teri's release is received poorly. This scene attracts the attention of many. Unbeknownst to Robert, this good deed led him to be up against greater forces like Teddy "Nicolai" (Marton Csokas) who works for Vladimir Pushkin(Vladimir Kulich), a major player involved with the Russian mafia.

Robert takes a moment to visit his friend and former agency mate, Susan (Melissa Leo). He questions why he cares so much about Alina before answering it saying, 'One day somebody does something unspeakable to someone else, to someone you hardly knew and you do something about it because you can'.

Susan insinuates that this is who he has always been and eases him by saying, 'Sometimes we make the wrong choices to get to the right place'. She tells him that the part his wife loved so much did not die and he should go be him.

He swore to his late wife, Vivian that he wouldn't be like this again but he needed the validation to do so in order to face the forces searching for him. Susan knew this and told her husband, Brian (Bill Pullman) that Robert only came for permission.

He faces numerous people, heals himself, kills Teddy and heads to Moscow. He said he would gain peace from Pushkin's death and he was there to gain peace. Pushkin asks what his price is but Robert doesn't answer and leaves a trap to kill him. After which, Robert walked out of the mansion through the front door.

He comes back to America and we see Alina again. She updates him saying that she got a job and changed some things. She makes it known that she found some money in an envelope addressed to her which would help her a lot. She thanks him for everything and leaves. The movie ends.

Side-note:

  • Teddy is a good villain but I was surprised they didn't have much of a fight scene compared to the fight scene by the mirrors. Teddy dies but after Robert gave him a chance. He gives people a chance to leave and/or change before things get brutal.
  • I was shocked we didn't see Alina again for a while.
  • I felt awful for Mandy(Haley Bennett), she was kind and protected Teri.
  • Robert has a good heart. He gave the workers that counted the money, some of it as they left. He encouraged Frank (David Harbour) to do the right thing and give himself up. Susan and Brian know him well and like his spirit.
  • Denzel Washington has a great cold stare like an emotionless glare into the soul. He has so many good lines in this and I liked his meeting with Nicolai in the restaurant is was intimidating but calm.
  • Right from the beginning of the movie, it is obvious that Robert is a mystery as he joked with Marcus (Allen Maldonado)about being one of the men from Gladys Knight and the Pips. Everyone wonders who he truly is.

  • He worked for an agency (unnamed)and had a fake funeral. He has a tremendous amount of knowledge with tact and precision.
  • He utilizes situational awareness greatly. He takes his time to analyze and determine the possibilities of each situation. He is precise with his things and uses that precision to his advantage.
  • He is rather humble as well. He lives simply, has a routine and takes the bus.
  • He wears his wedding band sometimes. He started wearing it when he started protecting people, maybe to remind himself that it is for the people and to prevent himself from going overboard.
  • We still don't know much about him by the end except that he wants justice, he was lethal before and swore he wouldn't but made an exception for Teddy, and he hates abuse (of power, physical, emotional etc.). No one knows much about him and he has a clean record. Teddy searched for more information on him but not much showed up.
  • We know he is skilled and arranges things. He sets up the scene and gives himself time limits. He also believes in the possible good in people.
  • Alina said he didn't look like a Bob but a Robert when he first introduced himself as Bob. She could see through him a bit and described him as lost.
  • Through this discussion, we learn that his wife was a book reader and wanted to read 100 books to recommend to the world. He said that she broke his heart and he took up reading to give them something to talk about if they met again. I guess she broke his heart as she passed away, we didn't learn how she died though.
  • Books are a great presence in the movie. Despite being something he continued for his wife, the books seem to shape his mind and character at the moment. The invisible man book at the end was interesting as everyone still questioned who he was. The books are his mental and physical weapon(he fights with them too). He's simply a complex man.

I truly enjoyed this article! I loved the Equalizer too, (both of them) and wish they could do another. Denzel Washington is one of the finest actors that ever lived and I am eternally amazed by his range. I saw that you mentioned the final meeting with "Teddy", or Nicholai seemed a little anticlimactic, and I agree, but somewhere in the back of my mind, I saw that as fitting. He was so evil and brutal with everyone that it seemed he would surely be Robert's undoing, so dying with very little resistance seemed deserving; almost as if to say... "You ain't so bad!" LOL! I thought it was especially telling, the way he looked at Robert with respect at the end. LOVED this article. I'm subscribing and hope to read more. 😉
