The Boys - Commentary and Analysis

Season 2

After too long a wait, I finally watched season 2 of the Boys and I have so many thoughts, all of which are framed around the women of the show because I genuinely do not care about any of these men (except of course for Frenchie). So here we go;

We start the season with Starlight schmoozing Homelander after Transulcent’s funeral, it's very clear that Starlight has learned how to play the game. She is in survival mode, doing only what she has to to survive in Vought tower. She has several encounters with Homelander and the rest of the team and it really shows that she is kind of stumbling through trying to find a way out. She almost gets her opening as well, when she exposes Vought and compound V to the media but it wasn’t enough and now she has to deal with Stormfront. Starlight is in her rebellious phase and I am living for it. She is running with Hughey and Butcher and telling Butcher off at every turn, it is AMAZING.

Mauve and Elena have reconnected and I love their relationship, I also love the subtlety in which they introduced it. The problem with the way most gay relationships are portrayed on television is that they draw unnecessary amounts of attention to it, therefore doing the opposite of what was intended. Mauve fears for Elena, she is afraid that Homelander is going to kill her, which would be entirely on brand. Homelander outs Mauve on national television, which caused a visceral reaction in me and then continues to exploit her sexuality through the 7’s new movie. Vought sets up a whole campaign built around Mauve and Elena’s relationship, branding her as a lesbian and completely ignoring the fact that she’s actually bisexual (as a bisexual women myself her storyline really causes physical reactions for me). Mauve comes to Starlight’s rescue at one point. It's amazing, she uses Black Noir’s allergy against him and it was savage.

We get introduced to a new female superhero, Stormfront and they give me a whole 2 and a half episodes of her being the strong feminist, they made me love her and then they ripped it away…Now I understand that she is a commentary on white feminism and a need for intersectionality but damn it's just so hard to watch. The thing this show does so well is force you to be uncomfortable and sit in its observations. Stormfront is apparently part of Vought's effort to stabilize compound V so they can create more fully grown superheroes.

Kimiko finally finds her brother and then struggles with his radicalization, Frenchie grounded her and showed her that she could be more than what they turned her into. Her brother however was fully radicalized without her there to keep him sane. We see two siblings on the opposite side of a war, a war that Homelander started and Kimiko does such an amazing job of trying to bring her brother back from the edge, but it doesn’t work and he gets killed, sending Kimiko over the edge and down a murder path.

At the start of this Becca just wants to get away from Homelander, she wants so desperately for her son to be nothing like his father, raising him without powers and sheltering him from the evil that he came from. But Homelander insists on awakening this kid's abilities, and he does when he feels Becca is threatened her son protects her with the strength that Homelander gave him. Billy finds her and tries to free her from Vought's grasp but she could tell that Billy didn’t want to take the child so she leaves Billy too.

The scene of the girls all kicking the shit out of Stormfront was absolutely incredible. I was cheering all the way through it.

The plot of this show is so well done it seems to be written around the commentaries and tropes that are so ingrained in its dialogue and characters.
