Superhero Casting Discourse Has a Double Standard Problem, and It Keeps Landing on Women Like Milly Alcock. Content Warning.
There was a time when casting news sparked discussion. Now it sparks judgment. A new actor is announced for an iconic role, and within hours the internet has already decided whether they “work” or don’t-often before there is a script, a scene, or a performance to evaluate.

The Patriot Games: A Totally Original, Definitely Not Dystopian, Celebration of American Athletics
Is This the Reaping? We have finally reached a period in the timeline of our universe when idiocracy is at an all-time high. A recent announcement from the current administration has sparked a ripple effect of discourse among our population. A discourse of excitement from one side and a sign of distaste from the other. Unfortunately, preparations are in order for fall 2026, as a four-day athletic event promises to showcase the “best” of American high school talent.

The Spider-Men I Were (By a Former Cosplayer)
Near the end of November 2018, a package arrived to me, and it was a costume that I would try on for the first time. Once I tried it on and took pictures with me wearing it, I was automatically hooked. That costume was my first Spider-Man suit. It's worth noting that this was around the time when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was about to be released in theaters. The aforementioned suit will be on the list I'll highlight in this story. I'll share some of my favorite Spider-Man suits I loved the most. These entries aren't in any particular order. Let me know which suit is your favorite in the comments below.

My First Reactions of 'Spider-Man' (2002)
If you're new to Vocal and have recently read at least one of my stories, I'm a nostalgic freak. I'm not exaggerating when I say that, because it's true. Let's take a trip back to the year 2002. There was a plethora of pop culture events that we enjoyed during that year: Avril Lavigne's hit "Complicated" was a breakout success, Halle Berry became the first Black actress to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, Ben Affleck was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive, and the infamous breakup of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. However, there was one pop culture event that would be the talk of movie buffs everywhere. That event was the release of Spider-Man. Based on the Marvel Comics featuring the titular character, it was released in theaters on May 3, 2002, and produced by Columbia Pictures (now Sony Pictures Entertainment). It starred Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco. The movie follows Peter Parker (Maguire) who gains abilities after being bitten by a spider and becomes Spider-Man. The movie grossed a total of $827 million at the box office. It is now the highest-grossing Sony superhero film. Spider-Man was released in 2024 to honor the 100th anniversary of Columbia Pictures. As of this writing, it has a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, proof that it's still relevant in pop culture. May 2027 will mark the 25th anniversary of the film's release. If a re-release of the film next year were to happen, I might wear a Spider-Man suit to mark this special milestone.
