Ranking the Movies of 2018: Week 8
Nearly 50 movies in 2018 for me. That’s actually less than usual for me in a two month period but let’s not dig too deeply into my sad, lonely life in front of a screen of some sort. This is, after all, a modern project intended to catalog a year in my life as a movie critic. It’s also about how singularly silly it is to rank and compare movies. Each film is subjective and to say that one movie is better than another movie is rather ridiculous in most cases.

How 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom' is essentially a Repeat of 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park'
Life will find a way... for the fifth time in row. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is set to release in theaters everywhere on June 22, 2018. It says it right there on the bottom of the Fallen Kingdom poster above this article. Look up.

Power Can Be Held in the Smallest of Things: Celebrating the Ridiculous Attention to Detail in the 'Lord of the Rings' Franchise
Whether it be the hobbits or the ring itself, the Lord of the Rings trilogy is essentially a lesson on how small things can often make a huge difference. A rather fitting notion, considering that it also perfectly sums up Tolkien's phenomenon on the whole. Simply put, he didn't just set out to tell a story, but rather to create a world so detailed, so vibrant, that it really feels more like reading up on actual history than make-believe. Therefore, if one was ever going to successfully bring these stories onto silver screen, there was only one way for going about it: by being more obsessed with detail than Gollum with his precious.

The Importance of 'Coco'
On Thanksgiving weekend 2017, Disney-Pixar released its nineteenth feature film. The film is called Coco, and unlike most its predecessors where talking toys, monsters, or fish are the central characters, this film revolves around human characters set in a small Mexican village. At the center of the story is Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez), a twelve year old who dreams of being a musician and emulating his favorite singer/guitarist Ernesto De La Cruz (Benjamin Bratt). Based on an incident that happened generations ago, Miguel is forbidden to play music by his family, particularly by his abuelita, or grandmother, Elena (Renee Victor) who pressures him to join the family business of shoe-making. On Dia De Los Muertos (or Day Of The Dead) Miguel is transported between the living world and the land of the dead, and finds himself on a journey that will eventually reunite him with his ancestors and the hero that he idolizes.

Oscars Countdown: 'Lady Bird'
Lady Bird, both the film and the character, should drive viewers up a wall with their incessant bickering, but they really don’t. We can thank *googles the proper spelling of his eventual wife* Saoirse Ronan for that. Lady Bird’s charm is a risky one that pays off because the film’s combative nature acts as a thin veil for its relatable protagonist. She makes mistakes, pays for them, and moves on. There’s a very real life understanding of cause and effect in this movie that grounds the whole experience.

Ranking the Movies of 2018: Week 7
Busy week for ranking the movies, as I have added nine movies to this list in just a single week. Two of these movies cracked the top five and the strange and wonderful new indie movie, Are We Not Cats, broke into the top five movies released in 2018. It was a weird and wonderful week with a pair of revelations, a new movie that blew my mind and the other, the best classic we’ve had this year on the Everyone is a Critic Podcast.

5 Reasons King T'Challa Makes a Great Mate
So, everyone has been super excited about Marvel's most anticipated film, Black Panther, which is given and totally understandable. I was dying to have that follow-up girl-chat after watching it so I called some of my girls and reluctantly shared my last bottle of wine. My last bottle of bodacious smooth red that is. Somehow we got to talking about what most girls talk about after they’ve watched a film full of action and fit men or simply said…a Marvel film: boys.
