The Academy of Dramas Only
Last year that was some rightful outrage over the Oscar nominations snubbing Mia Goth for her performance in Pearl. There is often talk in film circles about why on earth musicals and comedies get shoved together and why neither genre seems to get the proper recognition. The reality is that in the last decade or so the academy has stopped acknowledging these genres as valid or skillful. It's really embarrassing for them because I could (and am going to) easily argue that these are in fact some of the MOST skillful genres and they require a lot more from a cast and crew than the movies that tend to be highlighted. Now we’ve already talked about what could actually be considered Oscar bait, now let's discuss why the academy thinks that if a movie is enjoyable it isn't Oscar worthy.

We might be closer to unraveling the mystery of the One Piece, the elusive treasure that Luffy seeks to claim the title of Pirate King. It's widely known that Gol D. Roger, the former Pirate King, was the only one to uncover the One Piece on an almost unreachable island. But who placed it there originally? This question remained until Eiichiro Oda, the creator of "One Piece," revealed that the treasure was crafted by a legendary figure from 800 years ago, known as Joy Boy.

2023 is ending with one of the best rom coms of all time, Anyone But You. Now the first thing I have to say about this movie is fire the marketing team. When I first saw the trailer I wanted to see it because I like rom coms and Sydney Sweeney is hot. However there was nothing that even vaguely indicated that this romantic comedy was a Shakespeare adaptation. Literally the best romantic comedies of all time are Shakespeare adaptations and this movie is no different. Anyone But You beautifully adapts Much Ado About Nothing in a modern and entertaining way.

Poor Things starring Emma Stone was released at the end of December and it reminds us that film should be creative and a little bit weird. The movie takes risks and gives the audience a visually interesting exploration of humanity. Emma Stone delivers an Oscar winning performance and Mark Ruffalo delivers one of his most entertaining performances to date. Poor Things is sure to get the academy’s attention come nomination day and I can’t wait to see it receive recognition.

The Iron Claw finally has made its way to the big screen and it is easily one of the most amazing and upsetting movies of the year. The casting was incredible and the story is hauntingly accurate. The Iron Claw will probably be overlooked by the academy come Oscar nomination time, but that would be a mistake. The Iron Claw is seriously an incredible and emotionally gut wrenching movie. If you like family stories that might send you into a depression spiral or it might have you calling your siblings crying then this is for you.

I'm going to admit something: deciding who would be part of the first half of the year-end top 10 list this year was quite difficult. 2023 gave us a lot of very delicious villainesses on Lifetime's networks, and deciding who would be in the first half of that list wasn't easy, but it was done, and the list can be found here. Now, while deciding the first half was hard, the top 5 wasn't. As early as the beginning of fall, I had my top 5 cemented. These villainesses were truly the best of the best in 2023, and I'm still beaming over how delicious and epic they were!
