Six 100-Word Movie Reviews
My Oxford Year (2025), Director: Iain Morris I was going to write off My Oxford Year as your average romance film with predictable themes and characters. You can’t base your thoughts on a movie in the first half. This is the second Sofia Carson movie to come out this year. Carson and Corey Mylchreast create a heartfelt relationship. Illness in relationships isn’t focused on enough in movies. I did not expect the film to take that angle. Relationships are not all fairytale lovey-dovey moments. Learning to handle illness is an essential lesson. My Oxford Year is a bittersweet romance about making decisions to live your best life.

The Trump satire that swept the internet during Sydney Sweeney's controversial week (the onion)
In one amazing stretch, culture, politics, and media satire came together in ways that demonstrate how celebrity identification, party allegiance, and even bizarre humour can affect public attention. Two examples demonstrate opposite sides of the spectrum: on the one side, a well-known actress dealing with criticism over brand partnerships, politics, and box-office disappointments; on the other, a parody headline starring a significant former president, reminding us how satire enters and changes the conversation.

Dick Cheney – Power, Controversy, and the Legacy of a Vice President Who Defined an Era
Dick Cheney – Power, Controversy, and the Legacy of a Vice President Who Defined an Era Dick Cheney is one of the most influential and controversial political figures in modern American history. Born on January 30, 1941, in Lincoln, Nebraska, Cheney rose from modest beginnings to become one of the most powerful vice presidents the United States has ever seen. His long career in government, which spanned from the Nixon administration to the George W. Bush presidency, left a lasting impact on American foreign policy, national security, and the nature of executive power. --- ### Early Life and Political Rise Cheney grew up in Casper, Wyoming, and attended Yale University but left before graduating. He later earned his degree from the University of Wyoming. His interest in politics began early, and he was soon working as an intern for Congressman William Steiger. Cheney’s rise was steady and strategic. He joined the Nixon administration in the late 1960s and eventually served as Chief of Staff under President Gerald Ford from 1975 to 1977. This early experience in the White House introduced Cheney to the inner workings of power at the highest levels. It was during this time that he developed a deep belief in the strength of the executive branch, arguing that the presidency had been weakened after the Watergate scandal and the Vietnam War. This belief would later define his approach to government and leadership. --- ### Secretary of Defense and the Gulf War Cheney’s most prominent role before becoming vice president came when he served as Secretary of Defense under President George H. W. Bush from 1989 to 1993. During this period, Cheney oversaw one of the most decisive military operations in American history—the Gulf War. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, Cheney played a key role in planning and executing Operation Desert Storm, which successfully liberated Kuwait in early 1991. The Gulf War was seen as a turning point for U.S. military strategy, showing the effectiveness of modern technology, coalition building, and precise strikes. Cheney’s cautious and calculated leadership style earned him respect within the Pentagon and among allies. However, he also gained a reputation for being secretive and firm in his decision-making, qualities that would continue to define him later in his career. --- ### Vice Presidency under George W. Bush When George W. Bush ran for president in 2000, Cheney was initially in charge of finding a suitable running mate. Ultimately, Bush chose Cheney himself, believing that his experience and knowledge of Washington would be invaluable. Cheney’s time as vice president from 2001 to 2009 fundamentally redefined the office. Traditionally seen as a ceremonial role, the vice presidency became a center of influence under Cheney. He was deeply involved in policy decisions, particularly in defense and foreign affairs. After the September 11 attacks in 2001, Cheney became one of the main architects of the War on Terror. He strongly advocated for the invasion of Afghanistan to dismantle the Taliban and al-Qaeda, and later pushed for the 2003 invasion of Iraq under the argument that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction. While no such weapons were found, Cheney defended the war as necessary to protect national security. He also supported the use of enhanced interrogation techniques, secret detention centers, and expanded surveillance programs. These policies drew heavy criticism from human rights organizations and political opponents, who argued that they violated constitutional and moral boundaries. Nevertheless, Cheney remained steadfast in his belief that such measures were essential to prevent further terrorist attacks. --- ### Public Image and Controversy Dick Cheney’s image in American history is deeply divided. Supporters view him as a strong, decisive leader who put national security above politics and acted in the best interest of the country during one of its most dangerous times. They credit him with stabilizing the U.S. after 9/11 and reshaping America’s defense systems. Critics, however, accuse Cheney of overstepping presidential powers, misleading the public about Iraq, and normalizing government secrecy. His influence behind the scenes earned him the nickname “the shadow president,” a reflection of how powerful he was within the Bush administration. The media often portrayed him as a man who preferred control over publicity, and who valued results over popularity. --- ### Life After the White House After leaving office in 2009, Cheney wrote his memoir, “In My Time,” offering his perspective on the major events of his career. He defended his actions as necessary for national security and expressed little regret for controversial decisions. He also underwent several heart surgeries throughout his life and received a heart transplant in 2012. In later years, Cheney’s daughter Liz Cheney became a prominent political figure, serving as a Republican congresswoman and becoming known for her criticism of former President Donald Trump. This created renewed attention to the Cheney family’s ongoing role in American politics. --- ### Common Questions About Dick Cheney **Who is Dick Cheney?** He is a former U.S. vice president, defense secretary, and influential conservative leader known for his strong stance on national security and foreign policy. **Why is Dick Cheney controversial?** He is controversial because of his role in the Iraq War, his support for aggressive counterterrorism measures, and his expansion of executive power. **What did Dick Cheney do after 9/11?** He helped design U.S. policy for the War on Terror, supporting military action in Afghanistan and Iraq, and authorizing expanded surveillance and interrogation programs. **What is Dick Cheney’s legacy?** Cheney’s legacy is one of both strength and controversy. He is remembered as one of the most powerful vice presidents in history, whose influence changed the way the U.S. approaches security and war. --- Dick Cheney’s life and career tell the story of power, conviction, and the cost of leadership in uncertain times. Whether admired or criticized, his influence on modern American politics is undeniable. He reshaped the vice presidency, steered national security policy during a global crisis, and redefined the balance between freedom and security. His decisions continue to spark debate, but they also demonstrate the enduring complexity of leadership in a world where safety and liberty often collide.
