She-Hulk Review: "Superhuman Law"

In Episode 2, one door closed for Jennifer Walters, while another door opened for She-Hulk

A week passed since She-Hulk: Attorney at Law debuted, and I was still beaming over the previous week's premiere. Lo and behind, it's another Thursday, and that means another episode on Disney+! After a brief recap of Episode 1, Episode 2 picked up from the last moment from the premiere, with Jen receiving massive buzz for saving everyone in the courtroom from Titania (who did not appear in this episode, but we will definitely see more of her). The episode's opening scenes feature Jen's strong and green alter-ego receiving the She-Hulk name, which Jen doesn't like. The name would end up being the least of her problems, as Jen was informed that while her heroic efforts were to be commended, they also resulted in losing the case, and she ended up losing her job.

We see Jen visiting her parents and other family members right after several failed attempts to find work, and she's bombarded by pride that Jen's a superhero, but also crazy questions about the Avengers (her father, Morris, couldn't stop asking Jen about Hawkeye). Finally, Jen finds herself back in the game, as she's hired by the firm she lost to: Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway. Even better, Nikki's along for the ride, but as Jen later discovers, she is asked to perform as She-Hulk, as she will be heading the firm's Superhuman Law Division. This upsets Jen, as she vents in her fourth wall break that despite the fact that she's very deserving on her own merit, there will be a perception that she only got hired because she was She-Hulk.

But wait, that's not all, folks! Jen later receives her first case, and it's a doozy. All she has to do is represent Emil Blonsky, aka Abomination--the same criminal who attempted to kill Bruce Banner. Wow! Jen's request to be removed from the case was turned down, and she visited Blonsky in prison, where he claimed to be fully rehabilitated and had no desire to become Abomination ever again. Even so, Jen finds herself conflicted, and she calls Bruce and tells him everything. Bruce actually gives Jen his blessing to represent Blonsky, adding that what happened between them is water under the bridge, though the scene revealed that Banner was in the same spaceship that appeared in the premiere.

So after getting the OK from her cousin, Jen calls Holden Holliway and accepts the case, and all is well. Except for the breaking news report that Blonsky escaped from prison and was participating in an underground fighting ring. Oh goodness gracious. We were treated to a mid-credits scene, and it showed Jen (as She-Hulk) doing tasks around her family home: changing a tire, putting up the TV, and carrying six huge jugs of water inside the house.

Mark Linn-Baker as Morris Walters

Episode 2, "Superhuman Law," aired on Disney+ on August 25, 2022. The TGIF fan in me couldn't help but love seeing Mark Linn-Baker as Jen's father, Morris Walters; for those of you born after 2000, let me explain. Back in the day, ABC had the TGIF lineup, and one of the classic shows during that time was Perfect Strangers, which co-starred Mark Linn-Baker as Larry Appleton. Linn-Baker's done quite a bit since that show ended, and is still working; he recently appeared in an episode of Ghosts a year prior. No surprise, Linn-Baker was quite hilarious in his first appearance of the series, and I hope we see more of him.

This episode was a good look at the aftermath of Jen's public exposure as She-Hulk. The comedic chops and timing from the premiere were still in play in Episode 2, and so many plots continue to thicken. I absolutely love this show, and I'm immensely looking forward to Episode 3!
