Selena elena Quintanilla-Pérez was an American singer, model, spokesperson and actress. She was also a fashion designer who was dubbed the “ Queen of Tejon” music. On Friday December 4, Netflix debuted the first episode of season one of a new series about the singer. There will be nine episodes in this first installment of Selena the series. In 1997 Jennifer Lopez started in the movie Selena, which launched her acting career. There has been some controversy as to whether or not Lopez did her own singing in the film.

Selena’s fans continue to be loyal 25 years later and will no doubt enjoy this new series. Quintanilla/Perez was born on April 16, 1971. She was murdered just one month before her 24th birthday on March 31, 1995. Yolanda Saldivar was a former nurse who became better the president of Selena’s fan club had been embezzling money from the entertainer. Selena met with her at a Dsys Inn in Corpus Christi to obtain financial records that were supposed to clear Saldivar. The fan club president used several stall tactics and refused to hand the information over to the singer. She instead, pulled out a gun and cold bloodedly shot the entertainer the back.

A major artery was severed but Selena was able to run to the front of the motel where she collapsed. Saldivar was in hot pursuit and heard calling Mrs. Perez a bitch. Saldivar was convicted of the crime and will be eligible for parole in 2025. Natasha Oetez who portrays Yolanda Ssldivar in the Netflix series has expressed concerns about her role. She said she hopes fans don’t confuse her and her character with the real murderer.

Selena was considered as one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of her time and was named the top selling Latin artist of the 1990s by Billboard magazine. She was also referred to as the Latin Madonna because of her riske manner of dressing while performing. In April 1992, Selena married Chris Perez , a drummer in her band. The couple had been dating in secret because thty knew her father would not approve.

When Chris Perez tried to produce a something for the entertainment world about his late wife, he was met with opposition from his former father in law. Selena’s dad said Perez had no rights to do so. Selena’s widower gives his thoughts on the new series and emphasizes that he was not consulted. You can read about it by clicking on the link.

Selena’s posthumous collaboration with MAC cosmetics became the best-selling celebrity collection in cosmetics history it’s a shame her life was cut short and she did not personally reap what she had sown. Media outlets began calling her the "Tejano Madonna" because of the clothing she chose to wear and she is also among the most influential Latino artists of all time. Selena is credited for “catapulting a music genre into the mainstream market.” The tragic way her life ended was so unnecessary.

The Netflix series gives viewers a look at how it all began as it starts off with the singer as a a very young “ baby crooner.” It chronicles her life as she rises to the top and becomes famous. During her career, (1984-1995), Selena released a total of eleven albums. Five were solo and six were with her band Selena y Los Dinos. More than 60 million copies of Selena’s music have soldworldwide and 10 of her songs won awards. Ricardo Antonio Chavira Stars as Selena’s dad Abraham Quintanilla Jr., the family patron arch and backbone behind the band. Noemi Gonzalez,(Mia, The Young and the Restless) portrays Selena’s sister Suzette. Both actors say ms Perez left a lasting impression on them.
