Rufi-Noooooo: 'Hook' Actor Dante Basco Creating His Own Spin-Off

Are you ready to stick on the green lycra and take to the skies once more? In a story I "Never Neverland" thought I would be writing, someone is actually planning to return to the world of Hook — well, to the colorful tribe of the lost boys anyway.

1991's #Hook was one of those strange beasts that was almost perfect in every way: #RobinWilliams as a grown-up Peter Pan, Dustin Hoffman as Hook, and even a cameo from Glenn Close as one of the Cap's pirates (check it out at No. 6). With a cast rounded off by Julia Roberts, Bob Hoskins, and Maggie Smith, Hook also became known for its cheeky child actors who played the Lost Boys. Now Dante Basco, a.k.a. Rufio, has started a Kickstarter campaign to launch his own prequel based on the leader of the Lost Boys. Titled Bangarang (after his battle cry), fans have until March 15th to pledge toward the $30,000 target.

Pan you believe it?

While an adult Rufio tale would be impossible — Basco's character passed away in one of the film's most heartbreaking scenes — he plans to chart Rufio's formative years that took him to the land of crocs and clocks. The campaign is described as:

An underdog, coming-of-age film in all the best ways. It's the story of a under represented group of heroes - bullied because they're different, and nothing more (such as Roofus, who comes from an immigrant family) - who won't let their villains get in the way of destiny.

The Kickstarter page includes a video of Rufio's best bits to bring back all the feels from our time in Neverland, while also explaining that the film will be aiming for a Goonies-esque feel with an emotional score. Bangarang is currently planned as a short film, but if a $200,000 goal is reached, they will apparently be making a feature film. I'm not sure how they plan to stretch the story out, but it is already well on its way to reaching the first target. There is no word on casting yet, but an open call for child actors means anyone can participate to be the next Thud Butt or Pockets.

Basco will serve as executive producer, while the project will be written and directed by Jonah Feingold, who is currently working with Pitch Perfect's Brittany Snow to create another Pan-related project: Wendy. Surely any future Pan film can't be as bad as 2015's Pan, which was effectively a poor man's Hook, which even Hugh Jackman couldn't save from the jaws of the croc.

Cheick Tock Goes The Croce

Although at age 41 Basco is a little old to play young Rufus, could this in any way be a chance to revive his career? Although he has done plenty of voice acting, Basco's work hasn't exactly flourished since he played the mohawked menace as a teen, with his most recent credits including a singular episode of Hell's Kitchen and the direct-to-video Jarhead 3: The Siege.

To this day, #StevenSpielberg's film has stood the test of time and gone on to be one of Williams's best-loved films. Spielberg may have been notoriously disappointed with the film, but it holds a place in many people's hearts as a piece of '90s #nostalgia. Since Robin Williams tragically passed away 2014, Hook has become somewhat of a legacy, hopefully preserved alongside Mrs. Doubtfire as a film that will never be remade. Although Bangarang wouldn't exactly be a sequel, it seems like a bit of a cash-in on the legacy of Hook and Williams; however, if they were aiming to get us in the feels, we've fallen for it — Hook, line, and sinker!
