Dell XPS remains one of the most popular business laptop lines at the moment. And this year, Dell has continued to introduce the Dell XPS 17 9730 laptop line with the Intel Raptor Lake H processor and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 graphics card, providing incredibly "top-notch" performance. So what are you waiting for? Let's experience this computer with ME right away through the article below.

Design of Dell XPS 17 9730: Maintaining the XPS Style

The design of the Dell XPS laptop line has consistently been remarkably beautiful, and the XPS 17 9730 lives up to that reputation. Its exterior features a premium aluminum finish, giving it a high-end feel that distinguishes it from many plastic laptops in its class. Its interior continues to be adorned with carbon fiber - one of the materials that define the identity of this laptop series.

The machine's chassis is exceptionally rigid and elegant with CNC-cut edges. Standing out on the back is the familiar "Dell" logo, simple yet enough to make this laptop stand out.

In terms of dimensions, the Dell XPS 17 measures 374.45 x 248.05 x 19.5 mm and weighs approximately 2.31kg. While not the lightest laptop in the world, this weight allows users to easily carry it on long business trips.

Superb Display, Virtually No Complaints

The display of the Dell XPS 17 has never disappointed users. This new version boasts a screen size of precisely 17 inches diagonally, as the aspect ratio of the machine's frame is 16:10, rather than the 17.3 inches of previous versions.

The Dell XPS 17 9730 offers various screen options ranging from FHD to 4K LCD, and the model under review today comes with the FHD+ option (1920x1200 pixels). However, it's regrettable that Dell hasn't equipped it with the OLED panel option; instead, the manufacturer remains loyal to Sharp's panel until now.

Keyboard and Touchpad Experience

Compared to the Dell XPS 17 2021, the keyboard of the XPS 17 9730 remains unchanged. It still provides a shallow typing feel but compensates with excellent key responsiveness. The key travel and layout are also clearly arranged, preventing users from experiencing hand fatigue during work. Additionally, the keyboard is backlit, allowing users to work easily in low-light conditions.

The touchpad is spacious, facilitating users to perform multitasking gestures such as swiping up, swiping down, pinch-to-zoom, etc., quickly and accurately. However, the touchpad lacks support for force touch like the XPS 13 Plus.

Is the Performance of the Dell XPS 17 9730 Really as Good as Advertised?

The XPS 17 9730 offers a wide range of CPU options, including the Intel Core i9-13900H, Core i7-13700H, and Core i5-13500H. The model I'm currently hands-on with today boasts the highest configuration, featuring the Intel® Core™ i9-13900H (14-Cores, 20-Threads, 24MB Cache, up to 5.4GHz Max Turbo Frequency).

Though not as powerful as its HX-labelled counterparts, the Raptor Lake processor runs much cooler, making it ideal for XPS-class laptops. Additionally, it supports up to 64GB of RAM with a maximum SSD storage capacity of 4TB PCIe Gen 4 NVMe. Both RAM and storage can be further upgraded if users have the need.

In terms of graphics card, the model I'm testing comes with the NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX™ 4080 with 12GB GDDR6 and a TGP of 60 watts, which may be sufficient for entry-level SKUs but could potentially hinder the performance of more premium services. That being said, the Ada Lovelace GPU performs well at moderate power levels.

Overall, with the combination of CPU and GPU, users can confidently play games or run office applications with graphics ranging from medium to high. However, as it's a business laptop line, personally, I find its performance good but not sufficient, especially when playing heavy-duty games.

Summary

The Dell XPS 17 9730 is a solid laptop, worth the investment, but in the long run, Dell still needs to improve to achieve greater perfection, worthy of what Dell has brought to this laptop line. With its slim and lightweight design, sharp display, and sufficient performance to handle multitasking office tasks, it's perfectly suited for content creators or business professionals alike.
