22nd ANNIE AWARDS

Netflix's animation investment has paid off handsomely, as the streaming service received 52 nominations at the 49th Annie Awards. Disney came in second with 29 proposals for its film and television projects.

The Annie Awards, hosted by the Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Association and held on February 26, 2022 at UCLA's Royce Hall, honor achievement in film and television.

"Arcane," Netflix's sitcom based on Riot Games' online multiplayer game "League of Legends," received nine nominations. "The Mitchells vs. The Machines," a blockbuster feature from Sony Pictures Animation, received eight nominations, while Netflix's own limited series "Maya and the Three," directed by Jorge Gutierrez, received seven.

While Disney trailed Netflix in terms of total nominations, its film "Raya and the Last Dragon" dominated all content with ten nominations, followed by "Encanto," which received nine.

"Raya" and "Encanto," as well as "The Mitchells vs. The Machines," Pixar's "Luca," and Illumination's "Sing 2," were all nominated for best feature. "Belle," "Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko," and "Pompo the Cinephile," all from indie powerhouse GKIDS, are competing for independent feature. "Flee" by Jonas Poher Rasmussen and "The Summit of the Gods" by Patrick Imbert are two more independent feature finalists.

"Love, Death + Robots," "Bob's Burgers," "Star Wars: Visions," and "Tuca & Bertie," which was canceled by Netflix in 2019 but resurrected on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, are among the nominees in the general audience TV/media category.

"Amphibia," "Carmen Sandiego," "Dug Days," "Maya and the Three," and "We the People" are among the contenders for children's television and media. "Ada Twist, Scientist," "Muppet Babies," "ODO," "Stillwater," and "Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum" are among the preschool TV/media contenders.

Lin-Manuel Miranda has received two nominations for feature music. He's known for his work on Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix's "Vivo" alongside Alex Lacamoire, as well as "Encanto" with Germaine Franco. Dan Romer for "Luca," Youki Kojima and Yuta Bandoh for "Poupelle of Chimney Town," and James Newton Howard and Jhene Aiko for "Raya and the Last Dragon" are among the other music nominees.

Mamoru Hosoda for "Belle," Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Charise Castro Smith for "Encanto," Jonas Poher Rasmussen and Kenneth Ladekjaer for "Flee," Enrico Casarosa for "Luca," and Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe for "The Mitchells vs. The Machines" are among the feature directorial nominees.

The Annie Awards will be held live at UCLA next year, after being held digitally in 2021. "Despite everything, or perhaps because of what we and the world around us have been through for nearly two years," Annies executive producer Frank Gladstone remarked. "We intend to return for a full-fledged in-person event with all the bells and whistles." It is our responsibility to honor our community and its achievements."

The Annies will reward achievements with juried honors in addition to the 36 award categories. The Winsor McCay Award for lifelong achievement will be given to Disney animator Ruben Aquino, computer pioneer Lillian Schwartz, and Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki. Renzo and Sayoko Kinoshita, founders of the Hiroshima International Animation Festival, will receive the June Foray Award for charitable contributions to the animation industry, while the Python Foundation will receive the Ub Iwerks Award for technical advancement for its open-source Python programming language. Evan Vernon will get a certificate of recognition for dedication to the art and industry of animation, while artist and author Glen Vilppu will receive a special achievement award for his work instructing a generation of animation professionals.
