Irreplaceable You is a 2018 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Stephanie Laingl and written by Bess Woh. Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Michiel Huisman feature in the film. [1] Netflix premiered it on February 16, 2018.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw is a charming actress who exudes grace and intelligence , which is why her character's actions in " Irreplaceable You , " in which she is blatantly self - destructive and counterproductive , feels so out of place. The tragic love story directed by Stephanie Laing follows a lady who finds she is dying shortly after her engagement , prompting her to embark on a search to locate a new companion for her fiancé. The ensuing fatal - amour drama is far too ridiculous to evoke tears , and while its cast of well-known actors may make it an appealing option on Netflix (where it's exclusively premiering) , its long-term outlook is bleak.

Abbi (Mbatha-Raw) and Sam (Michiel Huisman) , a science nerd , had been together since a childhood class trip to an aquarium , during which Abbi aggressively bit Sam on the shoulder , replicating the monogamous Deep Sea Angler fish's courting ritual. They're living together in Manhattan and planning to marry , as well as expecting a child , decades later. Their joy is short - lived , however , as they learn from doctors that Abbi is not pregnant and that the bulge in her stomach is actually a large malignant tumor. While there are therapy alternatives to improve quality of life , survival is not a possibility.

Faced with such devastating news , Abbi cancels her gym membership , begins treatment with a blunt-talking expert (Veep's Timothy Simons) , and enrolls in a support group where crocheting is utilized as a technique of coping with terminal disease. Kate (Kate McKinnon) and Myron (Christopher Walken) are two of the unhappy kooks she meets , the latter of whom advises her that Sam is about to enter a major " slut faze " - a comment that rocks Abbi and motivates her to start planning for her socially inept beau's future love life without her.

Abbi discreetly builds OK Cupid profiles and interviews potential matches for Sam while she isn't teaching him how to wash laundry , despite the protestations of Myron , who quickly becomes her BFF. Though Abbi is first depicted as a Type-A personality in Bess Wohl's script , it all feels contrived , because Mbatha-Raw comes across as way too intelligent to not recognize she's trading her present with her paramour for a future she can't control. Abbi's desire to diminish Sam's loss (a process Myron refers to as " anticipatory grieving ") is understandable ; that she'd squander her time on such an useless plot sounds like the stuff of absurd movie fiction. r is so generically defined that he doesn't even deserve a name.

The proceedings' raft of implausibilities ( like Abbi and Myron spying on Sam with binoculars ) and Laing's fondness for shooting the duo at dusk alongside the Hudson River and on rooftops , which, combined with Leslie Barber's generic sweet - but-sad score , leads to monotony , can't compensate for Mbatha - Raw and Huisman's cute yin - yang chemistry. "Irreplaceable You" is the narrative of a dying woman who learns to appreciate what she has while she still has it. It employs a series of minor situations to teach a lesson that is evident to everyone except the too - dim -to-be-believed person for whom it is intended.
