Hello and welcome to Novels To Discover!

This is the first installment of Novels To Discover and I’m excited to kick it off with one of my recent favourite Young Adult books: “Nemesis” by Brendan Reichs.

Before I dive into how amazing this book is, here’s the synopsis for you:

It’s been happening since Min was eight. Every two years, on her birthday, she is murdered by the same man in cold blood. But hours later she wakes up in a clearing just outside of her hometown – alone, unhurt, and with all evidence of the crime erased.

Across the valley, Noah just wants to be like everyone else. But he’s not. Nightmares of murder and death plague him too, though he does his best to hide the signs.

And as the world around them begins to spiral towards panic and destruction, the two troubled teens discover that people have been lying to them their whole lives…

Seems super interesting right?! Some have comes Reichs’ work to “Orphan Black meets Lord of The Flies” in which fans of The Maze Runner and The 100 will definitely enjoy. “Nemesis” is the first out of three books in the “The Project Nemesis” series and it kicks the trilogy off with a bang. The Maze Runner author, James Dashner, gave a review that said: “prepare yourself for greatness”.

The cover of the novel features the words: “He killed me. He killed me not. He killed me.” Which sums up Min’s constant battle with understanding her life and understanding who is killing her every other year. The ‘rips’ in the books cover symbolise the killings the teenager has endured. It also makes it look really unique to any other book cover I’ve seen before!

The plot centres itself in a small town in Idaho, Fire Lake. The Anvil, a huge asteroid heading straight towards the Earth is causing mass chaos around the globe. But, Min and Noah have issues of themselves. The man with sunglasses and shiny shoes kills them on their birthday every other year. A government conspiracy ties their mysterious killer to an experiment that has been placed on Min, Noah and the rest of their classmates since they were young.

This gripping, end-of-the-world novel never had a dull moment. The novel is split into two points of view, from both Min and Noah. It’s intense and thought-provoking as this government conspiracy holds 64 teenagers at the centre of their experiment. I’ll leave out a few details as I don’t want to spoil anything, but the plot twist is CRAZY! As well as growing attached to the two protagonists Min, Noah, and the main side character Tack, you also grow attached to their motives. You want to find out about this government project as much as they do and boy oh boy are you in for a ride when you discover the truth!

Let’s review the protagonists, shall we?

Min: She is an amazing female protagonist who is smart and strong. She remained a powerful character throughout the book and always kept an element of optimism in her POV. She is very determined and holds her leadership quality throughout. At the end of her novel, she proves how powerful she can be, with the help of her friend Tack.

Noah: He is more of a complex character than Min is, but he is an equally powerful protagonist. Throughout the book you notice character development from him and the dynamics in his character change very quickly. It definitely makes him an interesting character; he’s one to keep your eye on! The end of the novel may reflect his true colours.
