“Thou shalt love the Lord, your God, with all your heart and soul.” - Godspell.

“Godspell” is coming to the North Shore Players (NSP) stage this November. Premiering in 1971, “Godspell” follows Jesus Christ as he gathers a group of followers and teaches them lessons about love, kindness, and faith.

Jake Lewis, from Hudson, directs NSP’s “Godspell”, a full-circle moment from when he performed it as his first show at age ten. The experience sparked his love for theater, and the play’s message stayed with him.

“The most important thing for a community is love for each other - a timeless message that remains important to remember in today’s divisive world,” Lewis said.

Auditions drew several passionate talents and led to tough casting decisions. Most actors are theater veterans or returning to the stage after a hiatus.

Izzy Weidner-Schmidt, from Peabody, is excited to return to theater, especially after performing in the show in her senior year of high school. She plays disciple Izzy.

“It is a very fun show that allows me to use some of the improv skills I’ve learned over the years,” said Weidner-Schmidt.

Celina Burgoeno, of North Reading, said she was drawn to “Godspell’s” ensemble format. As Judas, she has explored the character’s motivations through the book Iscariot, a historical novel by Tosca Lee.

Throughout the rehearsal process, Lewis said he has focused on music, humor, and storytelling. For Lewis’s version, he said he is making it accessible for all audiences.

Although the text has created some challenges, Lewis said they have made creative and unique decisions. He has also carefully approached the production’s depiction of Christ’s crucifixion, hoping to give it more emotional impact.

The cast has also taken the time to study their characters. Some have watched the original movie for research, putting themselves in their characters’ shoes, and read about faith.

Elaine Concepcion, from Lawrence, started theater in June 2025. She plays Anne Marie. Concepcion said she created her own character arc. Throughout the play, Concepcion said Anne Marie’s courage grows until she becomes more confident.

“To me, “Godspell” is about community, love, compassion, faith, forgiveness, and what it means to truly live those values rather than simply talk about them,” Concepcion said.

Music and Dance are important elements in “Godspell,” according to Lewis. The music can be complicated, requiring extra practice for the cast to master vocal parts.

Bonnie Rynkowski, the music director, has concentrated on harmonies, dynamics, and emotion with the ensemble. She describes the music as complex and uplifting, helping communicate the story's themes of faith and compassion.

“In our world today, this music is exactly what we need to soothe our troubles,” she said.

Love is a prominent theme in “Godspell.” Lewis said “Godspell” is important to showcase now more than ever because it reminds the world of love, connection, and unity.

Donna Shaw of Gloucester said the musical’s central message is building community across differences. Her favorite musical number is “Prepare Ye,” describing it as powerful.

“‘Love thy neighbor’ could not be more important than it is at this very moment,” Shaw said.

NSP’s “Godspell” invites audiences to consider how we can build a stronger community through kindness. Beverly resident Brett Bell (John the Baptist) said the play’s message is about spreading love.

“There is something in “Godspell” for everyone,” Hall said. “Our production is both funny and dramatic, light and serious, upbeat and contemplative.”

Audiences are invited to come share the love, connection, and enjoy theater. North Shore Players’ “Godspell” performs at the Hogan Regional Auditorium in Danvers, MA, Nov. 20 through Nov. 22. Tickets are available online.
