Might I have the three ghostly visits over with all at once?

North Shore Music Theatre presents its festive annual showing of A Christmas Carol based on the classic novel by Charles Dickens. Ebenezer Scrooge has never loved Christmas, ridding anyone in his presence. One night he gets a visit from three ghosts who open his mind about the past, present, and foreshadow future events.

It’s not the holiday season without the magic of North Shore Music Theatre’s A Christmas Carol. From the moment the lights dim to the final bow, the cast delivers a remarkable performance that captures the faithful spirit of Dickens’ story, spreading cheer and a message not to dwell on the past.

David’s Coffee’s infectious energy as the curmudgeon Ebenezer Scrooge is the heart of this production. Spry as ever, Coffee’s portrayal is wonderful as he transitions from a gruff man to the genuine warmth that Scrooge undergoes in his transformative journey. Coffee always ignites profound emotion and contagious happiness.

NSMT welcomes back Tommy Labanaris as the show’s narrator. He guides the audience through the story, adding an extra layer of depth.

The highlight of the evening (and my FAVORITE scene) is Jacob Marley’s haunting visit to Scrooge. Flying onto the stage in ghoulish makeup, Carrington Vilmont's startling performance sends shivers up audiences' spines. The Marley scene is a visual and auditory spectacle, creating a moment of theatrical brilliance.

Leigh Barrett and Davron S. Monroe deliver astonishing performances in their roles as The Ghosts of Christmas Past and Christmas Present. Both had notable vocals and outstanding stage presence. The ghosts guide Scrooge through crucial moments of his past and examine the present to shape his redemption.

The ensemble cast adds their giddy enthusiasm to the production. No role is too small in theater. Russell Garrett (Bob Cratchit) earned applause when he got the whole day off. Cheryl McMahon is memorable as the frantic Mrs. Dilber. Special mention also goes to Stella Centore and Ainsley Moulton for their adorable interpretation of Tiny Tim.

No show is ever put on its feet alone. The tech crew is hard at work incorporating special effects, gorgeous costume pieces, and creating an immersive London set. Snow falls right on the stage.

The songs, led by a live orchestra are pivotal to A Christmas Carol. Listening to the signature chiming bells always makes me happy. The musical numbers, particularly the lively Fezziwig's festival party and the dark, 'Isn't it Grand Boys,' showcase the cast's vocal talents and contribute to the overall joyous atmosphere of the play.

NSMT’s production of A Christmas Carol is one of the best holiday traditions. It doesn’t matter how many times one has seen this show. Something is always different, whether the cast, line delivery, or stage direction. One part that never changes is the message.

Under the remarkable direction of Kevin P. Hill, NSMT's production of A Christmas Carol not only entertains but also recounts Dickens' influential morals. Live in the present and don’t fret about the past. Most importantly, look forward to the future. This lesson resonates with audiences, especially during the holiday season.

Be aware that younger audiences may be frightened by loud noises, strobe lighting, and scary scenes like Marley’s visit to Scrooge. Christmas Yet to Come has an ominous appearance.

If you have not seen A Christmas Carol at NSMT, come see it and make it a new holiday tradition. A Christmas Carol is at North Shore Music Theatre until December 23. Buy your tickets now because they’re selling out fast. You do not want to miss this joyous production.
