My Review of "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent"

For Nicolas Cage fans this is a must. Even those that don't know his body of work may enjoy it as well.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent was one of my must sees for 2022. When I saw the trailer for the movie I was instantly enamored by the insanity this movie might become. That's why it was to my surprise when I got to the theatre it was pretty much empty. Why is no one talking about this movie?

The movie starts out with an old movie clip of Nicolas Cage. He's saving the day and watching it are a loving couple. They adore Cage and see him as a legend. Soon after there's a big action scene. The couple are attacked by some masked men. This ends with one of the partners murdered and the other kidnapped.

We then snap to a shot with Nicolas Cage as himself. It's most definitely a caricature of himself as what the public probably believes him to be. In many ways it's kind of a satire of the climate for actors that have been in the business for so many years. He's at an endpoint of his career. The roles aren't coming in as often and when they do it's only small bit role parts.

Cage is getting really desperate to revitalize his career as his homelife is at an all time low. He's separated from his spouse and his daughter is pushing him away. As the audience we see why. He's very egotistical and cannot see anything outside of his career goals. His goals have been blinding him from what's happening around him.

At his lowest point he finally decides that he will be quitting show business altogether. He has to find new ways of making ends meet. Fortunately for him his agent had found a gig for him in Spain. There's a very rich man by the name of Javi that adores Cage and wants him to join his birthday festivities.

Cage reluctantly agrees as he's at his lowest point and needs money. When he gets to meet Javi he discovers that this trip is a lot more than he had initially anticipated.

There's much more to Javi. He's a prime suspect to the disappearance of the person kidnapped in the first scene. We now learn that the person kidnapped was the daughter of an official about to be elected.

Upon learning that Cage is a guest of Javi, the CIA decides to use Cage as a means to find the kidnapped daughter. That's when the real fun of the movie explodes onto the screen.

The laughs start really coming in after Cage reluctantly agrees to help the CIA. There are a ton of really funny moments throughout the movie and it just never stops.

This movie is very aware of itself and has fun with the audience along the ride. They pretty much break the fourth wall in so many ways without directly talking to the audience. I really like how they didn't have to explain everything to the audience as they trust we are intelligent enough to understand the jokes or where they're going with certain scenes.

As a Cage fan you will absolutely love this movie. There are so many references to all of his past body of work. They also play a lot on his egotistical side. I'm sure that's not how he is in real life but it is technically how the public preconceives of actors.

Although a ton of the scenarios we see in this movie are absolutely ridiculous and wild there is still some sense of grounded logic. In some ways it's like a more grounded version of the Will Farrell movie Step Brothers.

This is definitely a bromance movie as Cage and Javi have terrific chemistry together. That pretty much makes the movie because the majority of the movie is based on their relationship with one another.

Overall, this is a must see if you're a fan of Nicolas Cage and for those that are into wacky humor. Even if you're not I think a some of you should still give this a try because this movie is very fun and endearing. The naivety of the characters really make you fall for them. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. I will definitely be watching this movie again.
